I am leaving in a bit, to buy a dearborn plow to use with my MX 6000 Kubota. Do any of you still use a plow for garden and food plot work?
Do any of you still plow with a 2 or 3 bottom plow?

Several neighbors by me plow every late fall and let their gardens mellow all winter. I just disk mine and then till in the spring. Plow does get deeper than my disk and tiller

I would if I still put in a garden.

The trick to doing it right without creating a hard pan, plus easy pulling, is to get it set up right for your tractor.

This means getting it lined up right left to right for your line of draft and if your tractor has it the wheels spaced to match the furrow. Then level the bottoms side to side with your landslide wheel on a block to simulate one wheel in the furrow.

Done this way the plow glides through the soil with minimal down pressure.

Most modern tractors today lack two key features for moldboard plowing. Adjustable wheel spacing and draft control.

And never plow when wet as that compacts and smears the furrow bottom.

Moldboards shine for weed control as you can invert and bury the weed seed bank deep enough to prevent them coming up. But timing is important so letting it lay fallow helps.

Well, I just got home from the road trip. The plow is in great condition. All bearings are good in coulters and tail wheel. It could use new shares, as the points are worn down some. If I can’t find them easily, I will just build up with welds and grind to shape![Linked Image]

These pics were on marketplace, so not my pictures, but the same plow. It is still on the truck, and may spend the night there.
I should be able to get it adjusted to my kubota tractor, or at least good enough to do what I need it to do!

Have the same plow.
Been sitting so long, I had to cut the trees growing thru it.
Seriously, until this spring, been at least 18 years since it's moved.

The guy I bought the plow from used it a lot. He recently bought a bigger tractor, and a 3 bottom plow, so he was not going to use this one anymore. I went with a 2 bottom so it would pull easier with my HST tractor, but it would pull more plow. I just don’t see the need to be in a hurry.
I do want to get a food plot and garden areas turned soon, before the sod freezes. I will bring in some topsoil with compost, to be tilled into the existing area where the garden will go.

I bought a Dearborn 10-152 two bottom at an auction back in September. Haven't got to use it yet.

If you can you should buy all new parts for the bottoms, for one because you can and it looks like the moldboards look worn in the pics as they should be square with the shear.

I do plan on getting some new parts if I can find them.
I don’t know exactly what you mean about the moldboard being square with the shear! I have read online that parts are getting harder to find, but I have not looked yet.
Thanks for any help, to all of you. This is all new to me.

Breaking new ground with tall weeds a length of logging chain from the top of the coulter post trailed back far enough to end up in the furrow will catch and fold over the tall stuff so it gets buried.

Most moldboard plows are constructed to plow at about 8 inches in depth. Being a 3 point hitch plow will give your tractor good traction and pulling will be easier. Also 3 points can be aligned easier then some of the older trailer type plows. Plowing is a combination of science and art. Be sure to set for the best depth, align all the working parts, plow at the correct moisture and travel speed. The plow is designed to work best when depth, speed and soil conditions are what they were designed with. I agree on the moldboard wear. If you do not have full moldboard you may not get the best rollover of the soil and the main reason to till with a moldboard versus chisel, disc etc. is to turn the soil layer.

This picture makes the moldboards look worn off on the bottom. I guess it’s just the camera angle making the moldboards look weird. Here’s a photo from the back![Linked Image]

I had to shorten this by 1/2 “, due to almost rubbing the left lift arm. Can’t have that on a new tractor! I got that done, hooked it up, and made my first attempt at plowing one of the garden areas. It was probably a little higher than optimal on moisture, but it will only get worse this time of year. I am glad I did this today, and now it can sit until spring. I will add topsoil in spring.
