they made a 760 carbine , I have seen 1 and it was in 350 Wheelen the carbine had an 18 inch barrel rather than 22

makes a handy rifle even handier.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

You can purchase a replacement spring meant for Remington Skeet and Trap 870s/1100s/11/87 and replace the hammer spring in the 760s and get a greatly improved trigger pull, not match grade but much better than factory. Mine still has 100 percent ignition even with the lighter spring.

I picked up a mint 760 in 308 a couple years ago with the intention of giving it to Dad. Once i handled it it was harder to part with but i still let him take it.

I bought one, probably 1968. 30-06. Shot many deer, probably about 70, with it. It was all I ever used for deer. Finally bought a S&W 500 and used that for a couple of years. Went back and used the Remington for a couple of more years. I had to quit hunting because I have a hard time walking. I decided to sell the 760, and I did. That gun was like a brother to me. I loved that gun. What I remember, distinctly is the sound of the action working. It had a very, to me, crisp, clean sound. I miss the gun but it was doing me no good just setting in the safe. I’d give a dollar just to take it out and shoot it one more time.

I can sell you a pile of factory ammo for it. Bring your "Bob" along as partial trade towards the ammo. smile

I have nothing clever to put here.

when I started reloading for it I used an M1 Garand load which was intentional so I could have one round for both the M1 and the 742
the 740 was being developed at basically the same time as the M1 then put on hold for WWII
M2 ball was the ammo of the time period and at the time Rem ammo was nearly the same I suspect the development work takin place in the late 30s was mostly using the same velocity 30-06 as was being used for the M1
.
went from brass sailing 30 feet to drops them in a nice little pile about 4 feet away , very soft shooting and the buck I shot didn't know the difference

the differences 740 to 742 were ejector , and extractor were beefed up.
the barrel threads became left hand so it wouldn't walk loose
the ejection port cover went from metal to plastic
the sights went to screwed on form dovetails or soldered
all these changes followed to the 760 to keep them the same but no change to the 760 numbers

here is a lot of good info on the 740/742/7400

I also have my dads 740. It was well cared for and never failed. He bought it new when he came home from Korea.
Ran a bunch of that Nato stuff through both of em. Those little black tipped ones were interesting to play with.
Thanks for the info's.

I actually bought 2 760’s. The first one I bought from Montgomery Ward. The first time I fired it something jammed up an the action would not open. I returned the gun to Montgomery Ward and got my money back. Remember that these were the old days. I then bought another one from a local gun shop. Back then they were “Fair traded”, which meant every body sold for no less than a certain price. This gun shop sold at a reduced price if you paid cash. I remember that I bought the gun for $125.00.

If you use the inflation calculator $125.00 back then is equal to about $11250 today

Their value hasn't kept pace with inflation.

Yep. A couple of beers makes the numbers blurry.

I have an 06 with a Monte Carlo stock I bought new in the late 70’s when I was in HS. It’s the only gun I hunt deer with.

I have heard about these and since I am in no real rush, I think I'm going to hold out and try to find a carbine. I just think they are really good looking rifles.
