Anyone familiar with this incident?
Had this story texted to me. Sounds suspicious. It is MPR for that matter.
I'm assuming some have had contact with this warden?, is he on the up and up?

The article seems to stress that this is an illegal catch. Here it would only be an illegal catch, if it was not reported and/or the animal was kept? Accidents are not illegal catches.

Article was a bit poorly written. The Pine Marten was an incidental not an illegal catch. Interesting enough I recall the CO once saw a dead Pelican floating in the river. On closer inspection it appeared it choked on a nice size Walleye. Turns out the Walleye was still alive and was released by the Officer.

An incidental catch caused the “trapper” to pull his line? He wasn’t really in it fir the fur was he.

Pulling the line seems a bit drastic alright.
Changing up his cat sets in marten country would be an option.
Non targets or incidentals in most cases are no fun to deal with, either reporting or releasing.
I close wolfsnares when I see wolverine tracks, until the wolverine moves on.
I have also learned to not set wolfsnares near winter moose yards.

Unfortunately incidentals occur. With experience you learn to minimize them , but it’s tough to eliminate them completely. Otter can be a plague on the Spring Beaver line as can the occasional muskrat. The more traps you set and the more catches you make only increases your exposure to the possibility

When I read the article I get the feeling he probably hadn’t had much experience dealing with them previously.

In his defense he certainly did the right thing by reporting the catch immediately. Quite frankly you never get in trouble doing the right thing !
