I set up some Bridger #4 DLS's and wanted to try them on a coyote. I have only caught them on coil springs or snares, so I put them in a couple hay sets.

The hay set was another thing I wanted to try. The perfect place popped up for the test. Got this coyote in front of a cam this morning. It is where I can see it from the kitchen window so you can't get much easier to keep an eye on than that.

The traps have larger pit pans and a center frame chain attachment point. I just beat a dent in the ground so the chain and frame would clear and that is it. We have weather moving in with rain and snow the first of the week and freezing temps at night the rest of this week. No pan cover, salt or antifreeze, just the trap sitting firmly in a dent, and covered up inside the U-shaped raised pile with straw.

I put a different bait on some sheep wool on both sets and stuck it under the center of the pile from the trap side. I put a little bit of lure on the straw pile in the same area and a little fox urine in a couple different spots on the pile.

Just thought it would be fun to try.

Should work well even after snow piles up. I use 3N’s on fox and they never fail through hay/straw and snow.

Not burying traps will grow on you and the DLS's really shine in that roll.

Well nothing the first night, just glad a deer didn't mess up the set. We will let it soak and see how long before a catch.

I do a similar set.I bury the traps a little better,,put a couple strips of bacon on the hay,,then set the whole thing on fire.

They were steady, I wanted to see if it would catch with the straw covering and be freeze proof. Do you cover the bacon with the straw? Like in the mounded-up straw where I put the bait?

Interesting! Can you explain what that method does for success for your catch?

I believe it adds more appeal to the set. Also in certain areas around here,,they are used to digging through old camp fires looking for scraps of food.

I found out turkeys love to root through the hay/straw piles. Set the traps off every day for a week straight. Finally moved the sets.

I don't cover the bacon.Toss on top and light the hay on fire.Walk away.

I will see if anything happens for a few, then maybe a chunk of beaver and or bacon. I will hide it so I don't catch a bird. I should see any interest or refusals on the cam. Not many coyotes around, at least 1 though, they don't get any respect around here.
