870 Express...at least it wasn't a Wingmaster. And shooting steel through an improved cylinder choke didn't cause that.

Don’t know how old that gun is but lot of older guns weren’t designed to shoot steel shot. I got an 870 wing master I bought brand new in the box for 100 bucks. I was 13 years old and bought it to hunt foxes with. I hunted with a single barrel Remington and had 2 grey foxes come to my caller. One got away so I bought the wing master. That was 1976. I still have both of those guns today

I’ve got a 870 12guage Wingmaster that dad bought in Japan in 1952 , same year I was born. That gun has killed a pile of birds and I would never shoot steel through it. My son gets it when I am no longer able to use it.

if it says express on the receiver then it wouldn't have been around till 1987 the 87-88 season saw steel shot be mandatory
however there was a recall of barrels
pre express they did the Remington sportsman's 12 pump sometimes called the 12P
they also did a 1100 with basic maple stocks and no engraving the Sportsman's 12A or 12 Auto
those were the budget versions in the mid 80s
