Hey folks. Didn't want to clobber up the 760 thread any further, so here we go.
My old 742 is basically a wall hanger now due to the common problems mentioned in the 760 thread.
Now I just had a notion to block the gas system and just cycle the bolt manually.
After a shot, this would give the expanded case time to relax and would likely extract easily.
It would be just like the pump, wouldn't it ?
It would make it useful at least. I could put a slight extension of sorts on the bolt handle for comfort if necessary.
Maybe its been done before, I don't know.
Thoughts ?
Thanks smile

Had one years ago it would seize the bullet in the chamber if it sat to long in the chamber not Remingtons best work for sure.

Ahlman's in MN used to convert these worn out 742's to pumps. It actually isn't that big of a job of you can find the slide assembly.

I have nothing clever to put here.

looks like they are still doing the rebuilds to make a 742 a 760

https://www.ahlmans.com/remington-742-pump-conversion.html

if your receiver rails isn't upset too much or your extractor messed up or your chamber rusted ,you can stone it and then run reduced loads and keep going as a 742.

M1 service rifle loads shoot much softer in the 742 than hunting ammo sold at stores
the difference is basically 2750fps with a 150gr bullet vs 2910 fps with a 150gr bullet

with my load the ejection went from half way across the range 25-30 feet away the brass was landing. to now there is a pile of brass about 4 feet away.
I am running 44gr H4895 under a Speer 165gr BTSP

Good info ... thanks guys !
I guess a comprehensive inspection of the chamber would be the first step, to determine the degree of corrosion and whether or not a polishing would maybe correct the problem.
OD case tolerances must be listed somewhere. Guess I'd polish out to the max., if its not there already.
Thanks again,

smile

If you know how to take one apart and have a Menke wrench to remove the barrel nut you can buff the chamber with a screwgun and 0000 steel wool with lots of oil. That solves many issues with them jamming and extracting. Most guys don't have the wrench for the barrel nut and try to Bubba it and end up bending the action bars.

I have nothing clever to put here.

SAMMI has case and chamber dimension drawings for all commercial calibers. Rifles, pistols, shotguns.

I own my Late Mom's 6mm. 742 . She shot a big Pronghorn lope with it, so I'd like to get the Rifle into someone's hands to get it Working again. It was fixing fine until I ran some 30 year old Hornady ammo through it.

how does the chamber look and is the bolt digging into the action bar and receiver?

If it peeled the extractor out of the bolt body there really isn't a fix for it.

take the bolt out of a parts gun , until the receiver is damaged you can keep throwing parts at anything it becomes a matter of cost over results.

A good used 243/6mm bolt may be like finding Hen's teeth. And even then you better hope it headspaces correctly.

why would it be any different than a 30-06 bolt?

all the same case head all the same length action

basically only the magazine and chamber/barrel were different on the entire gun between all the calibers

I picked up a 742 last year, the receiver rails were mildly beat up so I plugged the gas port with a modified machine screw to include a quill on the tip to fit into the barrel port to exclude gas from entering the gas block, works well, I do have to manually operate the bolt as was expected, as I recall, I read about this modification on the cast bullets forum

I picked up a 740 308 last summer. I was going to use it for my MN deer tag. I loaded up some 150 gr Hornady V Max and it shot great. I put it in the safe and never took it out till last Friday. I took it to the gunshow and put a price of 650.00 with 2 mags and a Burris 4.5 x 14 x 42. Had a few guys look at it, I ended up bring it home.

Ahlman's also took 1100's and turned them into 870's.

Just talked with Ahlmans, to convert 742 to 760 is $400.
