If im trapping coyotes in the snow could i just put some snow over top of the pan instead of wax dirt or will it harden and not let the trap spring?

If there is no freeze thaw conditions a light covering of snow is fine.
A lot of trappers use wax paper under the trap as well as over the trap to keep it from freezing down before covering with snow..
You can use spruce tips the same way instead of wax paper.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Try and move the snow as little as possible that you are putting over it. The more it is moved the harder it will freeze. Sifted snow will freeze hard as a rock. Use something flat (I use a miniature square nose shove) and skim up a thin layer of snow and then slide it off onto the top of the trap.

Not a high percentage move Id avoid it. I've had luck slipping a trap under a foot/leg hole in the snow with no need to cover it. Just come in from the side under the snow. Works great on trails going to large baits in deep snow.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

If you crumble the snow to kinda put a dusting over the wax papered trap, it hardens pretty solid. This week might be a perfect few days to lay some steel. It’s nice to set and let a light falling snow do the covering. Or, like mentioned, a small shovel to scrape a layer of top snow off without “disturbing “ it if that makes sense. Stan Forsyth has a good winter foothold yote trapping video.
Snares are much easier. I’m still hoping the senniker & lights out systems are legal for us open area guys next season. These rams work, but the little ones would be sweet. My buddy doesn’t snare wolf or coyote just because of the rams.

I have also used buckwheat hulls both under and on top of trap with peat moss and dust of snow on top to blend it and it does work.

The important thing to remember is not to set in a low area. This will somewhat prevent moisture to get under your trap. However, with temperature fluctuation, dirt hole sets will lead to some frustration.. I got one yesterday but should have had a double. The day before also lost another one. I can not wait for a good snow accumulation and cold weather conditions. There is only a dust of snow covering the ground in my area and it is very unusual.... harvest has been slow and frustrating....

Good luck !
