A reacher?

After watching dozens of videos of coons working those horizontal boxes and buckets, I moved mine to vertical. Bottom edge of box about 4 inches off the deck. They can still get in.....flow under that edge like water......but are till pushing forward with back feet, and pushing up with front feet.........and leading with their head and neck to rise up inside the box. Always find them dead with near perfect neck strike behind the ears.

How about a pic? I am having trouble wrapping my head around what you are describing.

Yes.......exactly like that......except it's a bit different. Our regs say anything as large as a 160 has to be set inside a building and up off the ground. This box is using a BMI 160, but the one next to it has a Belisle 160 that is a big bigger and stronger trap that will handle anything that shows up. I tried 220's and they are too big for these coon.

These have a removable lid on top to stock bait shelf below the lid. Once trained to go for the bait.......no trap.......there is no hesitation once the trap is set. They seem to be in a hurry to die. Because they are up off the ground, I put a platform below it. For some reason, this one has a 6 inch gap, I like 4 or 5 better.

I'd think lashed to trees and fence posts, they would work the same on the ground.

There is a variation on this that has a top entry. I like bottom better. No reaching and once caught, they fall out the bottom.

Also, as shown on the other sketch above, trap springs are pulled all the way to top of the slot. I set mine halfway up the slot. If all the way up, when the trap fires, the springs will propel the trap down and out. Set halfway, it fires in place where it is supposed to.
