Most yearling bucks don't stand more than 40" at the shoulder !!!

They are short compared with most adult males;

Is that the one out of Mississippi? There was a news article this year of a 75lb mature buck taken.

And, yes, us Bama men folk are giants among men.

If he took that one in the Talladega I can see why he went for the little one. There's some rough country in there. Tailend of the appalachians not much flat and level to be found in there and all of it heavily wooded.

That's bottom fishing, literally.

Try the University of Alabama Quad on a warm spring lunchtime. No finer sight in the South, lol.

There are a lot of bucks in the hill country that don't get much bigger than that. With the rise of high fence places ranching some superior genetics and subsequent fence failures we have started seeing some much bigger deer in the same areas. Axis too and those things eat almost as good as dry aged beef.

i know 50 years ago in the area around san antonio deer were not any bigger than greyhounds

i think that most species are smaller in the south than in the north. look at the skunks law dog catches. never see them that big here.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

That is true. Seems like they are running bigger from what I remember as a child. Used to be a buck fifty buck seventy five was a biggun. Now two hundred is a regular thing.

I chalked it up to more greenfields and corn.

Mainly due to the temps., bigger fair much better than dinks.
FL Key deer are among the smallest ..... and are the furthest south. Manitob WT's, on the other hand .....

Those are exactly the same ones I posted about. As well as being small, they would rather live right in town where some retirees will feed them then to make a living out in the brush.

I got stuck behind a school bus in the city of New Braunfels one time. The bus pulled up to a small yard and the stop sign came out. There were 3 does in the yard and the 2 grade school aged girls launched out of the bus with banshee cries worthy of any Comanche raiding party. These 2 kids ran right at the does who calmly walked to next yard and then turned to face them. It made me laugh, the stupid things seemed to be smart enough to understand property lines.
