Does anyone use Star Links “on the go” service? How do you like it and is it user friendly? Any other options?

Our internet has been down for two days at the house, and running crazy slow before that. Real dog and pony show with our rural provider. I’m the king about getting SL that I can use when at our cabin in Canada as well as turn on here in NE when home internet goes out.

You might ask the question on the wilderness forum. I have read about it there recently.

we have Star Link at the house. not sure what "on the go" means...

for home use, we like it a lot!

download speeds usually 7-8 times what local can provide.

I have installed it on a few boats and have not heard any complaints yet. I actually use it when I am at the marina as it is faster than the marina inter webs connection.

Not off subject, but I seen the Star Link in the Sky for the first time last fall. My son & I were waiting for our evening pickup from Elk Hunting, along a road in the Mountains of Colorado. All lights were off, just sitting there. I had looked up and seen the long Star Link System over head and said to my son, what -is that? He looked towards a tree and seen a mass in the branches and flipped on his light. He thought it was Lion, but I pointed at Star Link. He said, oh that is Star Link. He had seen it a few times before, but it sure freeked me out for the first time seeing it!

Thanks guys.

On the go, or mobile, is the plan you can take on the road with you and turn off for the months you don’t use it. It’s $150 month vrs $120 but when you turn it off your not charged. Is my understanding anyway.

I don't have it, but I can tell you what I've heard from people in the remote village of Pilot Point Alaska, where I spend some time. Some of the folks use the fixed location and others use the "RV" version. I haven't heard of any difference in the quality of service between the two. Everyone I know is pretty enthusiastic about it.

The local provider that people used to use cost $389 a month, and it had the speed that was similar to the old dial-up that you might remember. I have thought about getting Starlink, but I'm afraid that I couldn't get my crewmen out of the cabin if I had it.

HA! I think your right about the crewman waggler! I know I’ve gotten more done around here while the internets down.
Glad to hear the service seems the same.

Might be what campers use many have satellite hook ups from what I’ve seen.

We have the RV service so we can take it with us wherever we go, I think you can pause it for the months you don't need it. Been very happy with our Starlink.

I also just had it out with my rural provider. I just bought starlink this December as kind of a Christmas present. It just became available here, I had be wondering about it for awhile. I wasn't sure what to think b/c there wasn't anything to read up on how to set it up before it arrived but I figured I could handle it. The 30 day return policy sold me. I figured if it didn't work I'd send it back. I got the mobile one. I figure for $20 a month its worth it so I can take it anywhere I want to.

It arrived. There was a rectangle antenna if you will, maybe 1x2 foot. It was on an arm and after I mounted the feet it was on a stand. Its motorized don't try to adjust the tilt.

You wouldn't believe how easy it is to setup. Set the thing out in the yard pointing North at the sky. Run that cord back to the router and plug it in. The cord is clearly a weather tight connection.

Then there is a second power cord you plug into the router and plug it into 110. That's literally all it took to set it up mechanically. Its cold here and I just left the whole lot outside plugged into an outside outlet. The router is sitting on a window sill outside of the house and the cord is running across my back deck and out into the grass. Its probably been that way for a month now.

Anyway other than that you download an app and the app finds the router and or the satellite and you punch a couple of buttons and its working. I was impressed. If you can download an app and follow a few basic instructions it shouldn't be any trouble to setup.

My rural carrier advertised 20 mb/s and I usually got 3 and was lucky to get 8 sometimes. They locked me in at 3 and I told them to pound salt.

Starlink advertises 100 mb/s. All my tests have been ran on cloudy crappy winter raining days and I connect at 30 mb/s about everytime I check.
I think I have checked it and had a strong 8 a few times but its just how it goes sometimes with clouds etc.
(thats with me inside and the router outside of the house!)

One morning early I must have caught it right when the satellite went by and I got a speed test at like 180 mb/s but that was only that one time and I was leaving so I'm not sure how long it lasted.

It didn't take much to get mine going and I've literally just left mine all laying outside in the rain and haven't had any trouble. Never not had signal yet.

You wouldn't want a tree line or anything to the North of you. I was surprised actually I figured itd want to be South.
Its flat here and my first tree line to the north is about 300 yards.
Looking North I have a pretty good view of the sky. Mine sets about 45* tilted up and sees all sky.
It has a little heater on it and melts snow off of it when there's snow on it.

I'd invest in it if it was a public company. Maybe sometime soon.

Yes, you can turn off the mobile plan and not get charged for months you don’t use. I’m thinking of getting the home unit for the house and the mobile plan for Canada cabin and camper.

I’m a little concerned about tree blockage. Kinda hard to get an unobstructed view of the sky, horizon to horizon here and in Canada.

That is correct ... its month by month pay as you go. With no geo fencing. So you can use it anywhere

There is an app for a phone that you can walk around your yard with and determine what spot might be best for an antenna. I don't have SL and have not used it but many people here do have it. Never heard a complaint yet and there are trees everywhere. My buddy has his sitting in his yard and it it currently under three feet of snow and still work fine.

We've had this for over a year. Had one brief outage in that timeframe. Getting 75MB service in our area. ETA-the mobile service is second tier to the in home service...meaning in home/non mobile gets priority if you're in a high usage area. Less users in the area would likely see an increase in that speed.

FWIW- 75MB is enough to work from home and do Zoom meetings.

I’ve seen mine over 400 mbps. Usually around 200. The thing is amazing.

I have one at my camp on the Yukon Coast it works great. 5 or 6 people on at once some times. go live from out in the yard when Ethan is ptarmigan hunting. Post videos to Youtube, make phone calls, check Trapperman.com
Once in a while i have trouble getting on. But that just me. Some of my buddies have the mobile Starlink and post Facebook videos from all over the place.

I may get the Northwestel system just to stop supporting Elon Musk.
