Not Little Rascals Buck Wheat
Based on previous thread I did some research after WiMarshRat posted some success pics with his Buckwheat plots, as a result, I plan on planting some Buckwheat this year in a couple areas where soil building was my initiative. I completed soil samples and adjusted pH already; I plan to apply the recommended NPK at planting time.
Here's my question: My original thought was to plant it well after the last frost. Then before it went to seed, I was then going to broadcast winter rye into the stand and then culitpack the standing Buckwheat for mulch and biomass.
Based on its fast maturity could I let it go to seed, crimp it and potentially get a 2nd crop and still get my winter rye in? Any faults in my assumptions?

I planted buckwheat in my food plot a few years ago the deer like it and I ran the brush hog over the weeds it came back strong.

Guss- good feedback, I'm planning a 3-year soil building project in a couple logging landing turnarounds that are somewhat gravel/clay mix and lacking organic matter. Everything I researched said the deer will browse it but may prefer other options if available. I'm not growing it for a food plot (that could happen- unintentionally) but more for biomass production, trying to build up my top layer to make it more fertile.

A couple of my best plots were rehabilitated log landings where I planted buckwheat warm season then followed up with wheat or rye along with just a sprinkle of turnips for my cool season plot.

I don't know about food plots, but buckwheat pancakes are the best pancakes.


Being old is when you don't care where your spouse goes, just a long as you don't have to go too.
