Went out for a skidoo ride today to throw out some bait, beautiful day in the bush when out of the wind.
Was minus 17 c ambient temp, colder with the wind, but I had on my baffin boots, ski pants and the full face helmet so I was quite comfortable for the couple hours I was out.

Nice...about 1F for temperature then. I put out a river line on Friday and haven't been able to leave my driveway ever since. Ice storm version II expected for tomorrow so probably won't be able to lift that line until Wednesday. I hope.

Boco what is your snow depth now, and would you know what it is to the west of you?

Thanks
Osky

We had no snow to speak of up until a couple days ago maybe 4 inches, just enough to run the skidoo. It was like that since the first melt about a month ago. Then we had the mini blizzard-Now we only got a foot or so with some drifts here and there.
Cant say what they got out west.

Thanks Boco.
Many of the waters I guide on are in far northwestern Ontario and Northeastern Manitoba. Those waters all come from the east, over your way. Last fall some areas were way down, more than 4’ on some very large lakes. Going to be brutal beyond belief up there if some snow and spring rains don’t happen.

One of the driest summers last year that I can remember.
Was good for some animal populations apparently though.
Never seen so many ruffed grouse, and the marten had a good recruitment as did lynx, fisher, weasels flying squirrells and wolves.
Beaver were gone all summer(into the lakes where the only water was) but showed back up in their usual places in late fall.
They were very late putting in feed and the beds were small.
We can get a lot of snow here in February,March and beginning of April.
We will see I guess.

Yup. Marten usually fill the traps after a cold spell. Id imagine and hope a few are getting caught today.

Good luck Ryan. Warmed up to -19 today. It is a welcome change. Trapping has been the last thing on my mind as I've been busy keeping the furnace and the water running. I will say I'd rather deal with this -45 then the +45 we had a couple summers ago.
