also used to take metal garbage can lids put charcoal on them if the car wouldn't start let that burn down good then with the snow shovel push it under the oil pan
I remember a few combines go up in smoke doing that. why would you need to start your combine at -20 seems like you should have the harvest in by then also there is so much fine dry chaff around a combine more than one bearing has sent a combine up in smoke that is the most common reason they burn up here. with todays plastic cars 2 inches off the ground and the lack of a metal trash can lid this side of antique it would be ill advisable.

I know it was really cold yesterday but that's no excuse for my plow truck battery to not start the truck. The battery is a O'Reilly top of the line 2 years old!. This is the one of the only things made in the this country, and I don't know why mgf. today can't build one that last for 8 to 10 years. I don't know maybe they don't take pride in their work use cheap stuff to put the battery together. Anyway I was able to plow I took the interstate from my tractor. Snow plow truck with an electric hydraulic pump or maybe an electric winch? That puts a lot of load on a battery and they don't last long. FYI for all reading this - If you have a vehicle with a large electrical load , consider a beefed up alternator. They are available aftermarket for many cars and most pickups. Back in the day you could suspect that a police car was following you in the dark because their headlamps were brighter than most cars because they had a hi amp alternator. Increasing the size of your battery if you have room for it is a good idea too. I had a Dodge Dart years ago with the 225cid slant 6. I replaced the stock battery with a group 27 Diehard that was made for the Dodge 440cid V-8. Never had a problem starting a 6 cyl with a giant 65lb battery.

I have a battery charger with a 200 amp boost. Ten minutes on 40 amps then hit the boost and my semi will turn over. Haven't needed it this year for cold starts but when I do its sure handy. Has 2 amp trickle charge also. Since you guys brought it up think I will charge my boat batteries. Sitting on the floor of the kitchen pantry but been several months since they were charged. I take a jump start pack with me every time I go out. It's a Gooloo 2000. Awesome jump start pack. I also top off my battery every 6 months as I hardly drive any more so the battery never gets a good charge.

I keep a NOCO jump pack in each vehicle. Has come in handy a couple times. More than paid for themselves

Just had a guy stop in the shop with slow starting, 2013 Chrysler van with original battery.
Told him he got his monies worth from that one!

I had a red top Optima years ago. Great battery but spendy. New ones are garbage , do not buy. Edit - NICE truck !

Think that's bad......years ago the state ran the emissions test centers here. Took a customer's car with a seized air pump there to likely fail the test but would be granted a waiver for repairs exceeding XX amount. The state employee told me I could not have a waiver because all pollution devices had to be hooked up as when they were operating correctly. I tried to explain that putting a belt on a seized air pump doesn't work too good. State employee would not budge. So back to the shop. Got a brand new belt and installed it. Drive back to the emissions test center with the belt just screaming and blowing black smoke. Pulled into the emissions center it was only getting louder and now throwing chunks of molten rubber. Got my waiver. Pulled out my knife and cut the belt right there before leaving. What a waste of a brand new belt.

My ecodiesel wouldn't crank yesterday at -16 after sitting a week. Pretty sure I never replaced the battery as I rarely drove it. Cost me 270 for an interstate battery today. Maybe it'll go 6 more years.

Battery's freeze! not healthy charged batteries 3 of 4 batteries in the drive way a about 30 feet from each other started the vehicle , the battery that did not was fully charged Saturday when it ran for an hour while I was moving snow. of those 4 this is the newest battery by a year

I've had bad batteries from a variety of different companies.the best luck I've had is with interstate.but there not as good as they used to be either. I have quit using Interstate batteries. Failure rate has doubled in the last 3 years. I have wheel loaders and log trucks that need to run everyday. Old job at 3 golf course resort has switched out 600 interstate golf cart batteries. Crown batteries, I think was the name gave $50 trade on Interstates, not bad when core value is $20 each. Interstate used to be Gold standard for batteries.

I've been using car quest batteries the last fifteen years, seem to get 7-8 years before replacement, winter are tough on them here, vehicles that are not used during the winter months have trickle chargers on all during the cold weather.
