Our local station had a guy on there who owns an EV. He said with this cold weather, it takes much longer to charge his EV than it does in warmer weather. He was from the Twin Cities area where it hasn't even hit double digits below zero yet. What happens when it's -20 or colder? EVs are not practical for cold climate areas.

Must be nice to eat ice cream as fast as you want and not have to worry about brain freeze.

the super charger parking lot becomes a Tesla grave yard till it warms up

look at the reports out of Chicago

your tesla will get you a lot further if you bring your ice shack heater to warm the car wo the battery can do the driving

I was talking to a co-worker who says in winter they set the cabin temp to 50 , keep their coats on and use the heated seats to keep warm.

then it only cuts their mileage in half that was a typical winter day I haven't talked to him about 20 below

they have their own 80 amp charger in the garage so they can charge yet as it is warmer in the garage

if someplace with a heated garage had chargers and a flat bed they could go scoop up the teslas let them thaw and charge them

Buddy is trying to say people are getting the plugs wet that’s the problem. It’s funny he believes all the news he wants to hear then wiggles out of the news he disagrees with. I’m not saying he’s right or wrong just the way he accepts and rejects the news he’s fed so conveniently.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

If that was the issue, wouldn't it be a problem every time it rained? People like that make me shake my head.

I have an idea for you gents with Wall tents and stoves

go park at the tesla charging station set up your tent and pull the car into the tent with the wood stove going snake the cord in and start those bad boys charging

100 an hour to make your car actually charge

really some tarps and torpedo heaters could do the same

you could almost get one of those double hub ice shacks over a car , a couple of buddy heaters with 20# tanks and you could get charging

Sounds like a good business opportunity for you.

Portable heating stations, an enclosed trailer with a heater. Might as well throw a generator on it and put in the charging port also.

be a little like when my old snow blower would freeze up

I would drag it up the back steps into the kitchen put a bunch of old towels on the floor and blow a fan into it

in about an hour I could drag it back out and start it

my wife probably wasn't happy about that but more happy then she would have been out there shoveling it herself

I think electric vehicles should only use solar or wind power to charge their cars.

Apparently running AC in the summer reduces the range just as much as the extreme cold

Doesn’t sound like a winner too me

Definitely something government’s shouldn’t be mandating

but in the summer if it is 95 and you need to lower it to 75 it is a 20 degree differnece

in -20 you want it to be 70 it is a 90 degree difference

heating or cooling anything 90 degrees takes a Lot more energy than 20 degrees

I actually have an idea for the electric car users , take an old car seat base , mount a Buddy heater to it

https://www.farmandfleet.com/products/1267529-mr-heater-4000-18000-btu-big-buddy-heater.html

buckle that in the middle of the back seat with another car seat base that holds a 20# lp tank

now your all set to drive warm and toasty without using up battery on heat

now if you made an insulated car cover out of the stuff used on the inside of ice fishing shacks , give it a sod flap on the bottom to keep heat in better and you leave your buddy with the thermostat set low to keep it toasty warm while you charge.

same idea as a shipping blanket over the motor on your log splitter with a milk house heater tucked under it so that it warms up the engine enough to get the ice from around the carb controls
