Many of your are probably aware that the Wolverine was officially listed as a Threatened Species under the US Endangered Species Act in late November.
This status change is actually a Threatened designation with an interim 4(d) rule which allows the Secretary of the Interior to exempt certain activities that may result in inadvertent take of a listed species.
One of the exemptions identified in the interim 4(d) rule is to allow incidental take of Wolverines while lawfully trapping other species in its range. This is good news but meaningful trapping may still be limited through prohibitions on other activities such as operation of snow machines that are often used for running lines in remote areas. The animal rights activists are really upset with this and are submitting lots of comments.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service is currently accepting comments on this interim 4(d) rule until January 29th, so if you have any thoughts or input that may be valuable for the Service to consider before they publish the final rule, please submit them!
More about this interim 4(d) rule can be found at the following link from Howl For Wildlife:
Howl For Wildlife Wolverine 4(d) Rule This is a little different than Howl's typical actions as this requires you to submit any comments directly to the Fish and Wildlife Service through the Federal Register Portal.
This is your chance to voice concerns on this rule and help craft meaningful rules to ensure meaning trapping can continue within the range of the Wolverine in the lower 48.
