Our clover plots are still being hammered and have been. We plant them in our low areas that we can't always work up due to moisture, a couple are old beaver pond areas. Deer love them, well covered for security and wind, great bedding around. We put about 2 ton of lime per acre, on our plots, 475# potash, 100 # DAP, and 50 # of urea. Grow great we use that on our bracisca blends as well.

This area is not as shaded as one big mouth thinks . It gets sun on almost all of it during the days It’s pretty easy to spot the areas that don’t. Notice along the edge I didn’t get very good germination.
Yes b&b I’m proud of this spot. I own 40 acres that 22 is excellent hay fields. But every season I have couple really nice bucks living or using my property. Like mentioned before beans and corn on 2 sides of me but I can keep the does close so the bucks are right behind them

Nothing wrong with deer farming but how much you figure the price of deer meat per pound is?

Killing/ seeing deer on your own property is priceless. But think I spent 25 bucks in seed. Fertilizer lime roughly 30

Werent you the one that said investing in property was foolish because your kids will just sell it and blow the money after you're gone..? I think that was just prior to you getting 'a deal' on property.
I agree, harvesting deer on your own ground is priceless . ...

How big of an area does that plant? We just have folks that feed corn in our deer club and I've argued for years that if your going to feed, year round food plots would be much better. Maybe if I can show that cost is much less planting food plots than feeding corn it will convince folks to try the farming approach.

Only if you live where there are no deer on your land naturally.

We have 2 plots that are about that size. Most years they are grazed right down to the dirt by fall.

Jbyrd63, thanks for posting. It’s always cool to see deer in plots. The area in this picture will be planted this year. A few weeks ago, I was able to get it plowed, and soil amendments will begin soon. I have been waiting for 2 weeks for the soil test results. This area is about an acre or so, [Linked Image]
The group of three trees are chestnuts. All of the valleys on, and adjacent to my property end at this ridge top.

No only comment I keep saying is land prices now are ridiculously stupid! No way they property will produce enough to be profitable in your or your grandchildren’s lifetime. Land purchased and rental properties built maybe. But farmland ? No way

It’s roughly 1/2 acre opening but the road leading in I also planted. My main goal wasn’t necessarily to feed all winter but to keep the does on my land to raise babies. The bucks showed up consistently around October 3. I have a mineral lick just off camera that gets hammered year round. In fact I put out a brown block Christmas Day and it’s about 6 in square left.
The amount of scrapes that where made in this area was mind blowing. This year I counted 9 really big scrapes just in the main opening. But last year counting ones coming in on the road there was over 20 scrapes being worked consistently

One fact I haven’t mentioned is our deer density is really low in my area. That’s why I’m tickled to have the numbers on my farm right now. Western part of the state you can kill unlimited number of does if you by the bonus tags. In my county 1 bucks and 1 doe with a rifle. Farm I hunt 60 miles to the west I came see more than these in one field about every evening hunt.

Bucks and bear my last comment to you is you experience with what wil or won’t produce is based on your areas. You don’t have a clue about growing anything in mine. I got lucky and the wettest time this year was couple weeks after I planted. Rain averaged 2 times a week. Warm nights early. Plus the beans across the road helped me during the early stages of growth. Deer were in them. Cold temperatures and high winds has concentrated them in my protected area that has an excellent late forage.
Good luck with your plots next season

I'm simply jumping into a discussion about foodplots which I enjoy, not past beefs. The rule of thumb is 10% of the property should be in food plots if managing the land. We are expanding ours again this year, we are running around 38 acres of plots and need 70acres. We do have ag fields on our sides and around us, but still enjoy food plot work.
How much per pound does our vension cost us, valid question. When, my brother and I have been asked and ridiculed for our land purchases our response is simple.
This land we "farm" is ours and our escape, from stress, from pain, from the world, whenever we want to and to do whatever we want. It is our vacation trips, and therapy rooms. We do not drink, smoke, do drugs, go to the Caribbean, or Europe. So how much per pound does our venison cost us, (Priceless) is my answer to that question.
And listening to the jealous people who do not own land makes it even more priceless!
