Swamp how would that be handled if you harvested a deer and had it tested comes back positive isn’t that wanton waste of wildlife and say you kill a deer you know is sick we’re supposed to tag immediately but personally I’d let it lay than waste the tag because tags aren’t cheap but if you could take a known sick animal to get it tested they should issue a free tag , what is your take since you are a retired GW
jalstat,
Reading some of the comments on this thread almost makes me laugh...if it wasn't a potentially very serious issue.
State wildlife agencies are serious about this. But, there is a lag time to get test results. Here in Georgia, all samples got to University of Ga for testing. Wanton waste violation for a visibly sick deer? I can't speak for Illinois...Ga = NO! Leave it lay....go kill another. I've checked many hunter- killed deer that had various ailments from EHD, injuries, mange, etc. I told em to not tag...go discard that nasty-looking thing.
Many on here, that deer hunt and consume venison, need to slow down and read all they can about CWD.
Here are a few facts:
A) A deer may be CWD positive for several years and exhibit zero sign it is positive. Perfectly healthy-looking.
B) No deer to human jump has been 100% proven...yet. Close, but not 100% proven. See info about lab monkeys and folks that ate version at a wild game dinner.
C) Most state's DNR don't have any worthwhile plan once a positive deer is located. Most are just gonna take a few more deer from the general area, test em and then just monitor. Agencies are trying all kinds of strategies with no effective containment results.
D) There is NO stopping it in wild deer. If you don’t have positive deer near you....you will. Ex) Prions can remain viable on urinated grass for a year or more. Research has shown CWD movement in wild deer to be 1.5 miles per year. Find your closest CWD positive county and see about how long it'll be for you....without deer farmers bringing it closer to you.
E) Federal & state money is being poured into this, but what better thing to spend our tax money on. I'd rather put $$ in white-tailed deer than other stuff the government spends our money on.
F) If you bring venison home and feed your family and one or more of them die....you can look back at this thread and re-read some of the idiocies posted here and think on it a while.
And one other interesting fact: there is something in a cat's belly/digestive tract that neutralizes the prions. Bobcats, cougars, lynx, and likely housecats too....
