Leary sent this to me today. It must be a right hardy fella to be out on the ice like that.

"Them boys up north who are scared of your little slithery friends have to remember not only do we have Cottonmouths, Copperheads and Timber Rattlers to deal with in the South beaver trapping.

We have the dreaded Red Belly Ice Snake. These range from here to there, known to swim on ice till they cant no more, and sun when its 23 degrees outside.
This idiot candidate for the reptile Darwin awards was in a canal in Camden County today. Just barely able to move its head but still alive."

Some people and critters aren’t very good at life.

Sure glad we don’t have snakes here. I will deal with bears any day over reptilian or insect hazards.

Red-bellied water snake. Those have made me do a quick step back a time or two over the years.

I've never seen one ice bathing, though.

Mad Mike we have a ton of black bears over there too. Enough that you have to be careful you don't step on a "North River speed bump"

Yeah, black bears are much quicker in the winter months than snakes, surely. I absolutely love dealing with bears raiding my line. Blacks haven’t been included yet. Only the brown scratch and sniff's so far.

Not unheard of, most likely got ousted from its den for some reason IE collapse flooding ect seen it a few times ver the years, no different then those guys that catch a snapper while trapping under the ice

Used to live in a house that had a swamp on the south side and every year while there was still snow on the ground we would have woods frogs on the driveway headed towards the swamp never seen them move but next morning they would be a yard or two from where they were the night before

Those red belly water snakes have a nasty attitude in warmer weather.

I’d rather deal with the 4 inches of air gap under the ice that 160 is dealing with than snakes.

They sometimes want to get in your boat. Used to give my wife nightmares.

That's my favorite frog. When they jump, they tend to land facing back in the direction from which they came. Makes for quite the frog rodeo for a young lad trying catch one. They are also capable of being frozen solid for lengthy periods of time and survive. Their blood has antifreeze in it. Prestone maybe.

Anyone make a hatband out of a red bellied snake? I am wondering if the vibrant red color remains.
