I’m looking to get back into reloading this round again, I’m seeing the IMR 4831 is hard to find and very expensive if you do find it. Anyone have any good alternatives that might be cheaper? I’m shooting Hornaday SP180 bullets. This is for spring bear season.

H4831SC works great. I’ll check on how much I use. I have been seeing it available in a few places.

H-1000, RL22, IMR-7828, MAGNUM. H 1000 is what I prefer.
Edit, after re-reading op post I see the IMR. I was thinking H-4831. Yes the 4831 both IMR and Hodgen will work well. Buuuut H-1000 has provided the tightest groups and higher end velocity. The slower Norma and Vitta-Vouri
work well also. Sorry I don’t have their numbers off the top of my head. I don’t have data for the relatively new RL25 but because it is slower than RL22 (if their naming system remains constant) should be good as well.

I was shooting 74.3 grains of the IMR 4831, they are going fast, I forget how fast I’ll have to get the crony back out. The gun really liked it shooting ragged holes from a bench at 100 and 200. Looking to start finding some longer ranges to play with. Never could get the 7828 to shoot as well. Really looking forwards to bear snack sticks again.

What are you guys finding powder costing, I looked at midway they are $71.99 a pound and hazmat fee is extra. I’m going to go to a couple gun shops locally, but from what I have been seeing powder is in short supply.

Sorry, WWS. It would probably just tick you off if I told you what I paid the last time I bought powder.
But I will tell you the best deal I ever made was $120 for one 20# keg of H-4895 and an 8# can of WW-742. Part of an estate sale being liquidated at a local gun show. Both containers were original sealed from the factory.

I have never loaded 300 win mag. I do have a little powder and a few primers last I looked over 60 lb and not sure how many k of primers. Used to buy a bunch at a time haven't bought much in the last 10 years. Whan you see it I would suggest buying it. It's not going to be any cheaper or more available for a good while. Besides the Normal pre election buying the large amount being used around the world will make materials needed to produce it in short supply for non gov customers.

I've been dropping at least $45-50 a can on powder. If you want something cheap look at either ram (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) or shooters wold powders . .as far as primers go to Republic Ammunition and look at the GINEX primers . Cheapest ones out there right now and I've heard nothing but good about them. Picked up 1k but haven't tried any yet

I been seriously looking into reloading recently and what shocked me is cost of bullets. I like the barnes bullets and they are close to a buck around. If I pull the trigger I'll likely buy a lifetime supply of components as I doubt they will get much cheaper or more available. Pretty much have more than a lifetime supply of factory ammo for every gun I have so I guess from here on out I'm buying for the kids.

I understand your queasiness, it's mutual but you're still not quite there. I drove a 180 gr. Partition with 68 grains. I'm a conservative.

I am not of fan of cast bullets in rifles. You just cant shoot them at decent velocity's. Exception for me is handgun bullets. Especially in revolvers. Have shot MANY right out of the mould. Just lubed no sizing. Old style wheel weights are great. Hard lead. Been playing with 69 caliber round balls inside a wad for 12 gauge. Open choke no rifling. Pretty accurate to 50 yards. Weigh more than ounce. With longshot powder you can get 1500 FPS. Thats a BIG smack. If you have a choked barrel probably need soft lead stead of wheel weights. JB bore cleaner and remington bore cleaner both get lead out. Will need a brush. They wear out quick. Get them in bulk.

You dont need to spend a bunch. Cooking pot and utensils from a thrift store. Little MAPP gas or propane to heat the spoons so they bend easy
