In your part of the country how far, as long as far range hunting? Here in western Oregon it is very thick vegetation. Some places its easier to shoot across a draw, so you find distances all over from 50 feet to 5-600 yards. I know some of you have longer range hunting and some feel that's unethical. What's your opinion.

In east central Mo. we have mostly wide open farm ground. I have taken 3 deer at 500+ and several at 400+. But I new the range and had practiced at those ranges. Due to some health issues I no longer attempt those shots. We owe them a humane, quick dispatch. Never was a poke and hope guy.

All my deer this year were killed under 125 yards.

In years pasts some have been up to 275.
The longer shots were from a prone position with a bipod.

I want them dead not running around with a leg blown off.

Eastern NC is flat. I have taken three deer at 500yards also. I rarely hunt from stands that require long shots anymore. I am more concerned with a quick recovery and a short drag. At 77 I am not as fit as I once was.

My shots now are normally within 200 yards.

Mostly big woods where I hunt, most shots 150 yds or less. I think the last several years most of my deer have been shot at approx 50 yds

In the mountains I hunt here in WV there has been no logging for decades. So lots of mature open timber. I still hunt almost exclusively. Shots range from 75 yds. or so to 400-500 yds.

This year I killed both bucks under 30 yards. The longest shot I've had here in Virginia was 125 yards. Guess you could shoot at further distances but there isn't any need too when you can kill them at 30 yards.

Here in western Pa, 200 yards + would be called long range shooting.

Depends where you when you shoot, mostly thick here, but you do get some areas that are open a little 50-150 yds.

I rarely shoot out to 100 hundred yards. Most of my deer are shot at 15 to 50 yards. Most spots I can only see 50 yards.

In over 50 years of hunting northwoods Wisconsin the farthest shot was 120 yards, most are 30-60. I shot a caribou on the Nunavit tundra at 560 yards.

I love the idea of becoming proficient at shooting 800, 1000, even 1500 yards. Just not at big game. I know, everybody wounds animals, but from what I've heard, not nearly as many as a guy lobbing a 250 grain bullet at an elk in the next county.

I have shot deer from 7 yards on out to 400 yards depending on the hunting area, 3 year old clear cut acres to open ag land. I'll admit, I had one time, a single tree jump up out of a creek bottom to deflect a bullet on what was a wide open 350 yard shot.

Furthest shot on deer was about 120 yds, mostly 50-75 yd shots with some as short as 50 feet. A 200 yd shot would be almost impossible .

Here we go. Idk most of the opinions you get about long range hunting get kind a weird when you look at it.

Lotta folks will go sit in a deer blind over a feeder/ food plot in a heated stranded playing on their phone watching Debbie cakes and sipping on coffee just to center punch a deer at 75 yd with a 30-06 and some cor looks odd a rest and watch it run off for 50yd -100yd they will say that's "real " hunting and perfectly fine.... But then see a LR who been hiking and glassing around for a few hours dial in and high shoulder a deer at 600yd from the prone with a bipod and rear bag and some some custom whatever and bang flop him then that's highly unethical and not hunting.... Idk I get if your like a trad bow hunter who's potting and stalking deer to with 20yd or a hand gun hunter doing similar, I get how they can say LR hunting isn't hunting but billy bob " I've been running off the same 20rd for the last 5yrs stand hunter ??...yeah no homie

I mean I see so many will say " I would never shoot past " I wouldn't ". I ,I, I think some people don't understand not everyone is them . Most of the LR guys I talk to shoot more in an after noon practicing and collecting dope then the average guy does in a few seasons . Like their beyond serious that whole " well just XYZ " don't work in that world... Alot of them are bow hunters too believe it or not....anyhow I'm rambling now

It's weird here . Can go from shotgun country to 400yd shots within 100yd . Not even joking

I have seen a few guys that can shoot a loooong ways. Whats ethical is knowing your own limits and not worrying about what your neighbor does.

Killed em close as 12 feet and as far as 600 yards.
You hunt to suit yourself don't rag on any man's ways of hunting as long as legal and he is not leaving cripples laying.
