There was an ice jam above KC on the Mo River. It evidently broke loose last night and took 3 barges and a tugboat with the ice flow when it got to KC. It sunk one of the barges but they managed to corral the other two several miles down river. The run away tugboat was finally caught around Glasgow Mo which is about 70-80 river miles from KC. Towns along the river were having watch parties waiting for it to float by. Don’t take much to entertain us at this time of the year.

Living on the river has its benefits. Knew some folks that got brand new docks after a couple barges broke loose from the port, lol.

Run away LOADED barges are bad news and can take out bridges as well as about any other thing in their path north or south.

Some individuals use statistics as a drunk man uses lamp-posts — for support rather than for illumination.

Yup, folks look at a pretty river and never realize the sheer power of running water. Add several tons of mass being pushed by that water and you got an almost unstoppable battering ram.

Depending on where it started, that tug would have passed under at least 10 to 12 highway and railroad bridges along the way. Hard to believe it missed them all but maybe if it bounced off the banks, wing dikes and sand bars to stay in the main channel. I bet the screws are toast.

Have lived on a river my whole life. Watched a lot of stuff go by during high water events. All sizes of propane tanks, out houses, boats/canoes, duck blinds, dead livestock, coolers. Lost a boat or two also but always found them. Our rivers too small for barges or regular outboards.

I wonder where the jam came from. I drove over it near Blair NE yesterday and only had a few small chunks floating.
