I reset the traps on my 2 hay sets with the Bridger #4 DLS that I modified. At the end of last week, I just put some mouse bait on some sheeps wool and stuck it under the center of the straw pile. Then I laid, not bedded a trap on each side, and shook straw over them, 2 sets and 2 traps per set. No antifreeze, waxed dirt, pan cover, just straw. The deer set them off a couple times and about 3 days ago I put a little coyote gland lure on the center of the straw pile. This big male was lying on the straw taking a pre-dirt nap when I was pouring a cup of coffee looking out the kitchen window this morning. It rained hard all night so the camera covering it was all fogged up so no great pics of him working the sets. But it was my first coyote with a double longspring and trying a hay set that was easy and won't freeze. Sunday fun day!! My wife took a pic from her kitchen window when I was taking him over to the ranger.

I got a question. Why use long springs? In the 70's it took me about 3 minutes to see they are harder to conceal and harder for a 12 year old to set. I liked them for rats since they drowned faster. But all my long springs that were given to me got traded or handed on down for coil springs. I wanted them for beaver, otter and wanted to try them with this type of set because they won't freeze up for coyotes. No need for antifreeze, wax dirt or a pan cover. Just playing around having some fun. My 4 1/2 sleepy creeks have to be underwater to be legal here as well as MB 750's, but not these, so just another tool for otter crossovers or other dryland freeze proof sets. It's also a nostalgic thing.

But all my long springs that were given to me got traded or handed on down for coil springs. I use mostly coilsprings for land sets, but I will argue that most longsprings are much easier to set than coils and are the only footholds I use for water sets. With the exception of Newhouses and their copies, most longsprings can be 'broke' over your knee and set very easily with your hands, much easier than setting the same size coilspring with your hands. I know a kid here that started trapping beaver by himself at 12, he used strictly #3 longsprings (he has graduated to some #4s now that he is a couple years older and bigger) because they were the one beaver sized trap he could set by himself without setters. He couldn't set #3 coils by hand, and to stand on them and set them he had to have them on hard ground and something beside him to hang onto and press himself down with because he didn't weigh enough. That doesn't work well in the muck around a beaver pond.
