I have a question about moving established trees for someone who has actually moved trees with a tree spade. Will a 30' maple survive being plucked from the ground and relocated? What is the survival rate? The trunk is about 9" @ 10" above ground level.

30" diameter trunk?
It can be done, but not with a tree spade.
It must be hand dug. The root ball needs to be very large in diameter and several feet deep. The hole is dug a great distance away from the eventual, undisturbed root ball in order to dig under the root ball. The tree and the root ball is then lifted by a large crane, burlap is them wrapped around the root ball while the tree is suspended in midair, then the tree is carefully lowered onto a very large trailer it the upright position. This brings about many limitations in height, width, and weight restrictions as to where the tree can be transported to.
Not a practical endeavor by any means.

if the roots are pruned for a season before hand so small sucker roots grow
then go in and spade remove with 6 inches extra soil around this
it will take a 6 + foot diameter spade

52carl, 30' tree, 9" wide at 10" above the ground. Northof50. Thank you for your information. What is a effective way to prune roots? Have the guy with the tree spade come in and do it? I am on a golf course committee and we are deciding if we want to move some trees or buy nursery stock. We don't have a big budget so cost means everything.

Not with a conventional tree spade. Rule of thumb,1 foot of root ball for each inch in diameter. That would be a 9' root ball not worth the cost.

X2 Mike Mason. You will never capture enough root ball for survival of that tree. Plus the cost of moving. Start with new trees. Maples grow fast.

I had a customer move two maples that size, they came from Wisconsin to Central MN at a total cost of $1,500 a tree which was very inexpensive. One died after a couple years and I could not figure out why. Personally I would go with nursery trees and I would look into a mix of maples and Hackberry
