He's days old. He as born ok.but.got wet and cold and he developed pneumonia. On top.of thabhis mama wouldn't are him.

Jerry boss and another lady set up with him for 2 nights, feeding every 4 hrs, and decided they were "too busy"(their words) to take care of him..

They called me to see if id try and get him better cause no one else would take him.

They gave him a shot of newflur(spelling)for pnemonia and one of steroids for a couple days.

I got him friday and it's been around the clock since.

I've had to give him penicillin cause the pneumonia came back and he was showing signs of pressing syndrome.

I've been giving him NSAIDs for a coupe days.

It was really touch and go till monday afternoon when he seemed.to be getting a little better.

To be fair he is alot of work..thwnstarted tube feeding him because he wouldnt suck the bottle, my goal is too get him over to the bottle and back to the farm..pronto..we are not set up to raise him till the age of weaning or butchering..and after ive saved him, I ain't eating him.

He's started to get more strength..he pushes against my leg now when I'm feeding him.

Do any of yall cattle guys have any advice on how to ge him over to the bottle?

Please dont tell me to put him down cause he isn't worth the trouble.

I know he's gonna end up someone's supper..just not mine cause id say no one needs a bottle fed bull.

He's responding to my voice now and after 3days of me having tonqaller him arpundmtongetnhim tonstandnup, he's able to get up.and.down on his own and my backs SO happy.

He's a big guy, he weighed 78 lbs when he was born.

He's actually kinda sweet..

Any good advice on him wpuld be appreciated.

For one depending on the nuflor a second shot should have been given, you’ll need to read the label for the exact number of days, as I can’t remember, to help with the bottle try something sweet on it as molasses or sorghum, if nothing else try milk in a bucket you might be able to get him started on a bucket plus put some high molasses starter feed in front of him.

I don't have any advice, but I do want to commend you for sticking with him. I like the way you made up your mind and are taking care of business!

A runny nose doesn’t mean much, but if you touch his nose is it cold or hot? If it’s hot there’s a good chance he has a fever, if it’s cold I wouldn’t worry.

Thank you bob..they gave him 3 nuflur shots..one a day for 3 days, and some steroids.

Jerry is in Mississippi or I wouldn't need any help he'd be here to tell me what I needed to get to treat him.

He's busy catching otter and beaver so his minds otherwise occupied.

I did think it'd be easier to get him.to eat out of a bucket than get him.on the bottle.

Thank.you for the advice.

Ill get some starter grain high in molasses for him. I have a gallon of.molasses..should I add any of that to his grain?
I've been giving him a bottle of water ( via the tube)with a.little of either honey or mollasss and a little salt in it.daily.

Should he be drinking water from a bucket yet?

Ive offered him a bucket of water but he won't drink from it so far. I've putnutnin his mouth and stuck his nose in indeed and no luck yet.

It’s a touch early for a bucket but if he’ll drink out of one your far better off, and by the way if I could get salted honey water out of a tube versus drinking out of a bucket I’d take the tube also. grin

Ibob..t.seems.to.perk him.up.lol

His ears and nose are cold today but the last 3 days both were hot sonintreated him with penicillin cause he was rattlely and some.med for fever.

I told Jerry he's gonna have to go fast cause he's sweet. I've never raised a calf before but have always wanted too but were not set up for long term for him.

I told.his boss I'd try and save him.but I wasn't paying for the milk replacer for him. They sent a bucket.if replacer and a check to but another bag with him.

I enjoy nursing things back to. health. It's very satisfying to save a life that everyone's given up on.

He could still die, I'd be upset but I know I'm doing what I can

Thanks trapdog..he deserves a shot at life.

The fever probably broke then and yes he could still die but if the fever broke he’ll start going pretty good and will help with feeding as he feels better and more adventurous.

From what I know large animal neuro is likely nutritional or parasitic. Consider thiamine deficiency. Potential for meningitis

Cathryn, I wouldn’t force the bucket on him, I did that once and my calf got worse, it can sometimes put water in the rumen, he only wants it in stomach right now, keep him hydrated but don’t overfill him. Sometimes you can get them sucking your fingers and then slip the bottle in there as you remove your fingers, some of them really fight the bottle, sometimes it works to straddle them, back em into a corner, so they cannot continue to back away and work on getting that bottle in there. Good luck.!!!

Cathryn, raising dairy calf's I generally tried to get calves in the bucket within 5 days when they were get up and standing well. Lifting a handful of replacer and rubbing on their muzzle while leading them to the bucket sometimes encourages them to stick their head in a bucket.

Newfox1 gave some good advice for bottle feeding.

Our mill hated us (not really), we would add molasses to the starter ration (crimped corn, not ground) at up to 7 percent by weight. Much more and the ration would start to bridge in the mixer and augers.

Keep him dry on fresh bedding ( no dust) and out of drafts.

Fresh water with baby electrolytes. I think we added jello (orange?) as a sweetener to the mix also.

They pretty much like taking care of a sick child, spent many a night on the floor in the nursing stall with a calf in my lap under an wool army blanket.

Good luck!

His pen has no drafts. I made sure of that.

I thought maybe meningitis too.

The first night and part.of the first ah I was in the pen with him across my lap most of the time.

He was perky this morning..I hope he continues to improve.

Lets us know the calf is doing. That LA 300 and Sulphur pill will fix him up. He will drink and eat when he is ready and feeling bettah.

Get some scour pills before you need them and probiotic (?sp?) As the antibiotics can kill the good bugs in the gut too. I'd give calf manna over any grain as its a milf based product. Also try a lamb nipple when getting him started on bottle.
