My brother heats his house with used motor oil. Not sure why people dump oil in a hole. During cold winters, used oil gets sold the same price as diesel fuel here in Virginia.

I am 74 and still change my oil in all 3 of my vehicles. Full synthetic oil costs around $5.50 plus a filter $6-$8. All vehicles have oil monitor and I usually get 7500 miles or more on an oil change. For about $120 a year for oil changes for 3 vehicles.

The local county recycling center takes used oil at no cost. I store my used oil in 5 gallon bucket and make the trip to recycling center once a year.

A buddy of mine just took his Ford Focus in for an oil change and it cost him $60 for a conventional oil and filter change at local quick lube center.

I still change my own. Like several have said, I don't trust the "lube techs" at most places to change batteries in flashlights.

I do both my truck and my wife's car, twice a year with synthetic oil. Spring and fall.

Do those rubber boots on the front end need greasing with a needle or are they greased for life from the factory?

What boots? Tie rod? Ball joint? CV? Just remember, if you poke a hole in the boot, that will allow contaminants in to the joint, which may shorten the life, regardless of lubrication.

Some times there are aftermarket parts available that have grease fittings, versus factory ones which often do not.

I have a few of the gallon oil bottles that I store waste oil in
I also find cheap gas cans at rummage sales , work great for storing waste oil put a black stripe down the side with spray paint so I know what that one is.
I have a bunch of cans I mostly use them for transporting #2 offroad
but one is for waste oil
pay between a dollar and five for them at garage sales. mostly people moving or that got old and no longer use more than a 1 or 2 gallon can for the lawn mower.

I get the card caps for the cans

Manufacturers are in business to sell new vehicles. Not service, or make the vehicles last as long as possible. Oil changes are still cheap maintenance.

With the long warranties these days it's in their best interest to reduce problems with regular scheduled maintenance. Plus all new car dealers have service departments and the manufacturers very strongly pander to the service departments.

I worked in new car dealers for 12 years as a service tech. They want to pay as little as possible for service on a vehicle. As long as the vehicle make sit out of warranty, they could care less. At least that's how our warranty clerks treated our dealership and its customers.

Just look at recall "fixes". Absolute cheapest option possible to remedy the legal issues that sparked the recall, usually injury or massive property damage.

15 years ago I would have agreed with you about the pandering to the service departments

now I don't

maybe dealers in your area talk up their service departments

manufacturers are doing those guys zero favors

Anyone who gets their oil changed at quick lubes, Wal-Mart, etc. Is just asking for trouble.

Do it yourself, that way you know it's right plus you get the oil and filter you want, and you save $$.

Places that do hundreds of oil changes a week are probably pretty good at it.
Much better than joe blow who only does it once or twice a year.

YOU WOULD THINK
they might even get 95% right but they are all about speed how fast can they do it that is how you make money on an oil change when your paying the guy doing it 11 dollars an hour and the guy working at the McDonalds next door is making 15.

they don't measure the oil they have a hose down from the ceiling they dial in an amount if they just did 12 cars in a row that take 4.5 quarts and they get to yours and you need 7.5 you might well be 3 quarts short.
they are not checking anything they don't sell so while they are checking that the air filter they want to sell you for 70 dollars +20 to install( but ahh they had to take the old one out to look at it so what install they have to put it back if you say no) that you can buy at Napa for 25 is dirty they aren't greasing anything nor telling you about your hung up brake caliper or transmission leak or anything else.

some of them went to sucking the oil out because the had so many drain plug issues the replacement engines was costing them too much.

they make about nothing on that oil change it is a loss leader they make $ on the up sell , a system flush , an air filter .

joe I have been working on my own car 30 years has one filter number to keep , he triple checks the drain plug , he measures the oil , he checks it after starting the car .

so Joe's mess up sure but Joe isn't trying to set keep up to the pace of every 12 minutes while hitting his thc vape.
