I’m a new trapper and just joined up to read the archives and ask questions.

I have loved the outdoors since I was very young growing up with woods in my back yard to hunt and fish year round. My family are hunters and fisherman, but since I was a youth I have read and enjoyed Fur Fish and Game magazine. For over a year I have subscribed and followed a few trappers on YouTube and purchased 10 Duke dog proof traps to mange raccoons on the property we lease for deer and Turkey hunting. My hunting and trapping buddy is 10 years old, following my footsteps. This year after our deer season we set out our DPs, put some cat food in them and mini me ate 1/2 the bag of marshmallows that were supposed to be scattered near the traps.

We have been very successful so far. We are modifying our anchor systems to cables and for next year I probably will be using POGOs. I feel pretty comfortable targeting coons. I’m getting better at skinning and I’m really glad it’s not high dollar fur I’m messing up learning on.

Short term my goals are to learn about working fur.

Medium term- I am keeping my eyes open for used Dog Proofs and other traps to add to the inventory. I think I’d like to run a minimum of 20 DPs next season.

Long term-
In VA we have a continuous open season for coyotes. I have seen them on camera, so my long term plan is to learn how to set for coyotes and by next year at this time I hope to have 5 or 6 adequate traps to set targeting them.

We also have a bobcat on the property and I would give my kidney to catch a bobcat!!

Welcome to the forums.

If footholds are legal, #11 double jaws and #1 1/2 DJ make for excellent raccoon traps also. Always good to have a variety of tools in the tool box.

Congrats to you for involving your son, the youth of today are the future of trapping.

We are in Hampton Roads and our property is in Gloucester.

Not too far away. You should be pretty successful down that way. Lots of bobcats and coyotes.

We have a couple coyotes. During deer season we usually see one or two.

Right now we are drowning in raccoons! I think I could catch 100 in a season if I tried. I don’t know that even 100 coons off the property would protect the turkeys any.

I have been watching some YouTube videos learning about coyote sets. I’m not sure I have identified a spot on property that I want to set yet.
