The Hobbit series is one of my favorite books. I liked the movies too; especially the Lord of the Rings. The movie seemed to follow the Book nearly verbatim. I liked the Hobbit movie too for the action, but I never remember a white orc in the book.
Lots of folks can't get on board with the story. Its because they don't have a real understanding of good vs evil. Those Hobbit series books are all about Good vs Evil and small seemingly to be inconsequential people overcoming great hurdles.
JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were great friends and corresponded regularly. They left us with some real treasures if we look deeper into the message they were spitting.

LOL. My wife went on a hobbit adventure with our son and daughter when they were teenagers. They dressed in hobbit clothes, glued fake fur on their feet and went camping and rapelling. They had so much fun and the photos are priceless.
United we stand.

"The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" are based on the Old Norse sagas, including the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda. The character names are in the pedigrees of many people of Scandinavian heritage, including myself.
For instance Gandalf is based on:
"Gandálf Álfgeirsson Male 22 April 0708–19 September 0768 • GF2H-RHW"
His main appearance is in Snorri Sturluson's saga Heimskringla. He is often called Gandalf of Alfheim.
Keith Tolkein used a lot of sources in the writing of the books. Currently doing my yearly read of LoTR that I start on new years.
