I don’t trap fur anymore but coyote been getting pretty thick around the house so i set some snares ive caught 5 in a week within 100 yards of my house and they all been males any idea why its just males ?

Because they were the ones that hit the snare first , the only difference is you’re not killing 5 like when you get a female

That's fairly common in a high population.
Posably aggression. Ave noticed several times when I start a line when the population is health, I'll have a pretty good streak male coyotes caught before I cath a female.
Also like worrior said you need to be holding a beer.

I have areas and of corse times of the year when there is more travel going on with males and or females. Now with breeding season in full swing, the coyotes that are not paired up or have found a family to attach them selves to, are searching for just that. Also I believe that not all find this and form small groups of their own. Kind of like a bachelor herd of deer. The other guys information is also good. It might be just that simple as the males just happened to hit the snares first. I am very curious as to the age of the coyotes you have caught. My bet is that if you stick at it long enough, some females just might show up. But nothing surprises me with coyotes any more!

Years ago I had a rock quarry that I was trapping. Caught 17 reds from it. Only 2 were females. They where both in a double set I had next to an old dozer. Man those where the good ole days. No yotes around here then...

1st one i caught was older than the rest little heavier and worn teeth, then the other 3 were younger probably round 30 or 40 lbs and one was real young round 20 lbs

update this time on days off i caught 4 more coyotes one female and 3 males the female was around 40 lbs and one male a little heavier and the other 2 males were juveniles, thats 10 maybe max distance of 300 yards from my home, i still have a few left i heard some howls behind my house the night before i left for work

Do you guys really have 40lbs yotes? Ours are almost always smaller than that.

I caught a 44# one year before last, not common here but possible. I would guess the average here is somewhere between 25 and 30#

I keep a record of coyotes I catch on my place, some times there are streaks of males, other times it is females. This is all off of ~38ac and I think there is a den on the place next door. Figure most of mine are roaming when I catch them

I generally always catch and shoot more males than females. But, I’ve only shot one at 40# and maybe caught 2 that pushed that 40# mark. All those were males. Females never get that big down here.

Biggest I’ve caught was 50 years ago

I can tell you that when chasing yotes and you come across a pair in January breeding season that the male takes off and streaks out of there trying to get you to chase it to draw you away and the female will stay behind and play stupid. I've seen it happen 100 times. Run one out of a square and go back to that square and kill a second one... the first one will be male and the second one will be a female.
