When I was a kid we would go up to Superior Wi and camp, for two nights, filling 8 to 12 milk cans full of smelt. Cleaning them til you couldn't stand the sight and smell. Lot of suppers, but cheap food source.

Same with the other Great Lakes. I have no idea about Lake Superior though.
The cut back on stocking salmon years ago because the alewives were disappearing from the food chain.

Lots of factors probably. Salmon stocking, zebra mussels, gobys, cormorants and crowds dipping every creek 24/7 when the run was on all played parts I'd bet.

My dad used to dip em. I remember cleaning buckets of them when I was a kid. My mom was so ticked, I used her "good" scissors one year. whistle grin

Makes my day when I walk into a bar or restaurant and I see smelt on the menu.

When I would catch a 5 or 6 pound Brown Trout in the spring,,it would have half a dozen smelt tails hanging out of its mouth.AND,,a belly so full of them you wouldn't think they could fit another smelt in there.Folks here had been Dipping them smelt like that for hundreds of years.Never a problem. When they stocked them Trout and Salmon,,within five years the Smelt and Mooneyes(Alwives) went away.
