My first post here on the forum - but did read the forum regularly as a guest. I spent the last 5 weeks feeling like I was rode hard and put away wet - hands equally swollen so bad I lost grip/movement then the ankles did the same then moved to one knee. Went to my MD doctor and was ordered to a group of blood test that check for RA and other markers - tests revealed extreme inflammation in my blood which worried the doctor extremely because I nearly died a 1 1/2 year ago of sepsis. Did more blood test which included the Lyme Disease test. Verdict is advanced stage of Lyme disease and now on a course of Prednisone - 40mg per day down to 5 mg per day for 16 plus days or until they get a solid lead of what's going on. Has anybody had Lyme Disease that got this bad? Was Prednisone prescribed or something less evil. I'm almost 70 years old and have worked and lived in the outdoors all my life. Please share your experience. Thanks!

I was diagnosed with Lyme about 8 years ago. I had lost my wife about 3 months prior. I didn't know if my symptoms were because of grief or something else. My symptoms seemed to change daily. Finally, I had severe edema in my feet and legs. That can be one of the symptoms of heart failure so I finally went to the ED. The doctor started saying "Lyme Disease" right away. They drew blood to send in to test for Lyme. She put me on Doxycycline that day with the idea that "if it's not Lyme, the doxy isn't going to hurt anything". I knew it was Lyme before the test results came back. I was feeling better in less than 36 hours. I've had no long lasting effects so I consider myself lucky in that respect. I probably got Lyme because I went turkey hunting a few weeks before that. My wife was an avid turkey and deer hunter so I thought I'd try to shoot a turkey for her.

Prednisone has a lot of nasty side affects. Drug of choice is doxycycline.

I have a rescue Shih-tzu that has been diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Every so often he gets so he can hardly walk. When that happens, which is maybe once a year, we give me a slight dose of prednisone. He's back to normal within 24 hours.

Does that cure it or just a temporary fix?

I have not, our son has had it twice. Once not too serious, the 2nd round was rougher., Both cases were about 20 years ago. Three of us traveled to northern WI in 1979 and one of our group got what were classic signs and really sick but at that time no one really knew anything about Lyme's or his doctors did not. He got the classic signs and was on meds for several months.

Do you have any further valid information to corroborate this claim ?

I know a couple guys that have gotten it. They both can’t eat any meat besides chicken or fish anymore. It makes them sick.

From what I understand, Lymes has been around a long time here on the east coast, it's just people and medicine didn't know what it was, suffice to say, longer than Plum Island.

If your friends can't eat red meat it's probably not Lymes but another infection from Lone Star ticks.

Be careful with doxycycline, I'm not sure it's the drug of choice anymore, there finding out that the bacteria can build a shell around it's self to hide from the doxcy there is another that the LLMDs use also be sure to take it at least 30 day's or longer otherwise you'll leave survivors that will be immune to the antibiotic, the bacteria is very smart and complex, and our CDC Is a pile of s-----t.
