I have always had either a plastic bedliner, a rubber bed mat, or both and have never had a rust issue. Had some rubbing on the paint in a couple spots from the plastic liner, but no rust. I bought my first new truck last year. I had it lined from the factory - very similar to if not Linex, and I bought a rubber bed mat - easy on the knees, keeps stuff from sliding, and protects everything.
Also have a 99 Ford Ranger bought a couple years ago- has a plastic bed liner in it. No rust underneath that amounts to anything that I can see...and I added a rubber bed mat.

On my 2015 I put in a molded drop in bed liner. last year when I traded it the bed was like new. the new GMC came with a sprayed in liner. the roughness of it is hard on the knees.

Sometimes a slick bed is nicer than one that's not. Like unloading bedding from stalls. Also seems like the texture would be more difficult to keep clean . My old 97 ranger has paint it's scratched and dented up but not rusted. I have been thinking about having it lined but those two thing have keep me from doing so. Very good points. That's why I like the rubber bed mat. I can just roll it out of the bed if I am moving stuff like bedding, dirt or mulch. Then hose the bed out, let it dry and put the mat back in.

My 2000 silverado got rhinolineed the day it left the dealership. 24 years and 300k miles of hunting, fishing, trapping and farming later it still looks almost as good as the day it was installed. It was put in professionally. That may make a difference compared to a do it yourself job. ^^^^^^ saved me some typing

I’ve done the roll on stuff it’s a lot of prep work but cheap considering. Don't they make a preparatory product once called Preps-all, or something like that, to ensure the roll on bedliner adheres well?

they spray the underside, just like the box...it works, and unless you are buying a new truck every 3-4 years max, it's a good investment

I have a drop-in bed liner in a ranch pickup that is coming on 20 years old. Last summer I took it out and look at the box bed to see what it looked like. To my surprise it looked like it came from the show room. Totally impressed no rust or rubbed areas.
The problem I have with spray-in is that you still dent scrap and scare the bed and box. The worst to me is dents and drop-ins you don't get dents. If I used pickups to go, get groceries than I would install the spray in liner.
A work and general truck I use drop-in liners.

I can't picture how to keep the spray away from seals or other areas one might not want to line, but I'll take your word for it. It might be a better option than oil.

Problem with mats or plastic inserts is they trap moisture underneath and the constant abrasion against the steel bed along with the moisture can lead to rusting. The spray ons like Rhino coat or whatever the dealers use are very good and not slippery, but expensive. There are roll ons that are similar but I have no experience with them, ... I know Home Depot and the like have it . I'm sure Amazon or other online dealers have information on them. I've seen way too many plastic bed liners lying on the sides of highways...not that any of my trucks would ever would of been empty enough for that to happen lol
