I am wanting to buy a half dozen #2 for pocket sets on drownders because a lot of the coons I have caught chewed their leg off in a 1.5 mad. So I want a trap that is got a bigger jaw spread than a 1.5, so I am going to get #2. What brand would be proffered for my situation?

Use a double jaw trap in case your drowner fails for some reason. This will eliminate chew offs.
I prefer 1 1/2 for coon
#2 will give them MORE room to chew

Bigger the jaw space more problems you are going to have. Stick with a 1 1\2 with double jaw or even inside lamination.

If you feel the need to buy more traps for coon go with smaller rather than bigger. #11 DLS are good

The traps that they were chewing out of was a duke 1.5 double jaw. I was already going to get a dozen more NO BS 1.5 but I thought that I would get #2's. But from what you guys have said I will just stick to getting 1.5's.

Thanks for all the input! grin

I would unless I can get them in deep water quick. If you can drown them fast go to a #2, the trap is heavier. But dry land I would stay with what you have. Just my opinion though.

My question is why? If you are having problems with coons chewing either go with double jaw or a smaller trap. I set a lot of pocket sets, I'm mean a lot of pocket sets. Earlier in season I had over 50 just on one small bayou, and close to a 100 on other waterways. My go to trap is either a #1.5 CS or a #11LS. When I run out of those traps I break out some B&L #1 LS and Duke #1 CS. I stay away from #2's because it gives coons and minks too much space to get to their foot.

There are mink (and coon) in Nevada? And here I thought it was just High Dollar Bobcats there. Learn something new everyday! ................... the mike

Those B&L #1 were awesome. Years ago when i trapped in PGH, PA i used them alot. They even held the occasional grey fox

I think it might be worthwhile to look into why you're losing a lot of coon with those 1.5 double jaw dukes. Plenty of people use those traps and lose very few to chew outs. 1.5 double jaw were basically built with coon in mind. Might be a basic question, but are you sure they are chew outs? Sometimes there just wasn't a good catch to begin with. Plenty of swivel points on the chain? If there isn't good swiveling action that can cause issues with any trap.

It was a half decent catch and I have 3 swiveling points on the trap.

It may be a bedding problem. Traps must be solid with no movement. Especially with coon. Coon are sensitive to things underfoot

What is the reason behind a double jaw trap reducing chew-offs?

Coons only chew below the jaws where their foot is numb, if there is enough room under the jaws for them to get their mouth in there. The double jaws reduce that area making harder to get to the foot and the foot swells a little between the trap jaw and the double jaw so there is a lump of foot under the jaws even if the toes are missing. That lump is easier to hold than just a couple slick bones.

The duke double jaw has been and is still used by the majority of long line coon trappers catching 1000+ coons a year. If coons were chewing out they wouldn't be using those traps.

If you want a #2 sized trap that will hold coons you'll need to weld in your own double jaws or you'll have more chew outs using them.

Here's a #2 Victor that is a great mink and rat trap but still hold coons due to the double jaw added...

1.5 should be better than a 2 for your issues with coon. Smaller trap. Anchor in water or drown them too.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

It’s a drowning issue not a trap issue. Either the water is not deep enough or you need to re evaluate what your using for drowners.
