Nice. I keep the back feet on the other side of the board personally. Gives me a nice straight skirt above the tail. You keep the tails nice. Open is key. When I see dried otters with black tails on an otherwise prime otter you know the tail wasn’t fully opened up and fleshed.

With otter if I'm selling to a taxidermist most have me case skin them and cut off the whole feet with a lopper so they can skin them as they wish. I often have to convince them that I can skin the head out without screwing it up for them.
Kudos to you Mud for figuring out a way to realize more $$$ for those otters. The eastern/midwestern market for otter has been stuck to the fur trade for waaaay too long. Otter aren’t a popular taxidermy item around these parts anymore. They’re mighty common. If more folks shipped catches of otter to them western sales it wouldn’t take long to flood that market as well.

Another day on the river. I’m about 50 miles north of where I started the season. 10 beaver from 15 traps today.

12 yesterday and 17 today. Had 28 traps out for today’s run. Also an otter. Three of them were kits so they almost don’t count!

Nice looking otter NF. I might put up the otter I caught yesterday like that. Like mud, I'll probably opt for the belly side for the hind feet...old habits die hard and I've always pulled down the tail side as much as possible to make a longer pelt since prices were tied to length.

That sounds like a good idea NF.
Pulled up my line today. 11 beaver, 1 otter, 1 coon, from 28 traps. This was the 4th check on much of the line...one more check than what I usually do. Water had dropped quite a bit and several of my footholds were silted in bad, beaver walking all over them!
Will spend the coming week getting ready for the OTC auction on March 2nd.

Put up the first otter like mud's. Won't do the second one that way though...too much time for just a potential extra $10. Of course I'm getting $60 for just a regular put up.

A bonus with a slide wire and deepwater polestake is you can run 2 or 3 slides to the one pole. They aint pulling that up. I am a big fan of multiple sets and extended checks at good productive locations.
