27 lbs is a veritable beast in the otter world. Congrats! Nothing like the first beaver and first otter all at once. Heck of a good!

Well I'm back in the game boys, Got new place to set yesterday. Guy asked me if I could trap maybe 4 or 5 but not trap them out. So I set 4 traps. Two 330's and Two old victor #4 double longs. The Victors I bought used from a guy when I was in my teens. They were my very first beaver traps. I set them out of nostalgia.
The results were these 3 XL to blanket beaver. Two in the 330's and one in the Long spring. [Linked Image]

And in the other double long I was left a present. At least I'll recognize it if I catch it.

I am glad to see someone else useing victor #4's. All I use is #4 long springs, when I run out of that 4 dozen I have a dozen of like new #4jumps. I set all front foot sets on drowning slides. Also run 3 dozen 330,s. Spring trapping can be hectic when setting up to 15 different locations on a 100 route. The first 2 days checking can make for a long night of skinning. Most sites are farmer complaints so all beaver must be taken. In a year or 2 beaver are always back, makes for good job security.

My first two beaver were also caught in Victor #4 DLS's (same night). I had read an article in a 1973 Fur Fish & Game how to catch beaver.

Good to see you back in the game Turtle.

Your a busy man Foxlake. You must really put up some numbers in a year. Yes I really like the old #4 vic dls. I should have went for a front foot catch on the one I lost but wanted to set one for a front foot and one for a back foot. I'm still trying to get two more permissions and plan on using them some more.

Couple questions if you don't mind:

What do you stake or weight your drowner cable down with on the deep end?

Are you a clean skinner?

Almost all of my trapping is 3.5 feet or less water. I run 10 feet of cable to 5 ft of half inch rebar. It has a washer welded at 16 inches and cable is attached to it. Then rebar is drove into the mud that deep. In deep water I put a 10 lb window sash weight 6 inches from trap and run 10 foot chain, have only had to deal with a few live beaver. I trap out of the pickup or off four wheeler and can get rihjt up to sites. So weight is not a issue. I rough skin beaver as it is faster for me, I can flesh a blanket beaver in 6 to 8 minutes. I have already put over 500 beaver this winter, so with lots of practice you can get pretty fast.

If you can flesh a blanket in 6 to 8 minutes that’s impressive.

Thanks Foxlake, would love to see how you flesh. Don't know if my eyes could see that fast lol. Wow 500 already. Fantastic. You have quite an operation. Thanks for sharing your staking system.
