So I have all these cap cuts left over from the saw mill and as they won't go through the woodchopper without some serious cutting up, I came up with another idea to get some use out of them. I bought some shiitake mushroom spawn plugs and armed with a batterie drill and said plugs I went to town on some of those slabs in my pile. I put them un a shady place ....... and now we wait.
have any of you tried this and if so what did you get out of them.

The only thing I think I read is shade and keeping them moist... cool project, good luck.

We get a fair amount of rain this time of the year so i have that part covered and the slab stack is under a couple of empress trees with a stand or poplar to the side, so it has good shade once the leaves are back on the trees.

We have about 450 logs. If the weather is good we can get about 125lbs in a fruiting. Keeping the logs out of the wind will help allot. You might have to put the cut edge on the ground to keep them from drying out.

After putting the plugs in, I put another slab on top to cover the cut and I may screw them together.
Do you think that is going to be enough ???

I grow our shrooms with full cut logs. About 4 ' X 4 -6 " in diameter. Not sure how it would work with slab cuts. The logs need to keep moisture throughout the colonization process. If they dry out too much the spores won't be able to replicate very well without good conditions.

8 to18 months will tell the story. Mark your slabs with a metal or plastic tag to document your plugging date and your variety of shroom.

I ate some shrooms from our logs a couple weeks back during the warming spell we had.

Bob, do you stand your logs vertically or stack em kind of like a log cabin?
I just ordered 750 plugs for oysters and cut logs last weekend.

I usually Lincoln log stack mine to minimize space and to keep them organized better. I know some lean their logs onto a hitching post like set up. I can see how that would give easier access to harvesting the fruit in that manner by spinning the logs to get to other sprouting areas. It does require more space. I put mine on a leveled pallet to keep them off the ground.

I inject most of my longs but do some plugging.

Freshly cut wood is desirable.
