Tried my hand at trapping beaver this week. Saw a fresh dam on Sunday that wasn’t there 2 days prior on our small creek while checking coyote traps. Ran back to the house about a mile away and grabbed the waders, made up three cable tie offs, 3 old rusty 330’s a partial bottle of
Backbreaker that Tocatchapredator sent me in a bundle of lures I bought from him.
Made a castor mound just upstream from the new dam and put in guide sticks. Set the other 2 traps in what I hoped were the runs leading to the back dens.
With the weather reaching into the 70-80 degrees on Monday and the sets visible from the road, I did my first check at 5:00 AM before work. From across the creek I could see the guide sticks were disturbed at the castor mound set. Was very happy to see my first beaver at the end of the cable. 31 lbs. I just quickly reset the trap but didn’t have time to fix the disturbed set.

I put it in the freezer and headed to work. By the time I got home it was after 7:30 PM before I had a chance to get back to remake the set. To my surprise the trap was gone again. I pulled the cable and was thrilled to find a 27 lb otter. Holy Crap I was pumped.

Remade the set with guide sticks and checked the other 2 sets and found my second beaver in a run set. 40 lbs.

Luckily I only had a couple 100 yards back to the Pioneer to carry them. Catching these would have never happened without the knowledge shared on this site. Thank you all.
