More insanity from morons in Albany NY. Bills S7927 & A8295 if passed will require harvested coyotes to be tagged and weighed ,and if over 50 lbs require DNA test to see if it is actually a wolf. If deemed a wolf the area where taken will most likely have trapping and hunting more heavily regulated to protect possible other wolves in the area.
This is a result of the guy who shot so called wolf in Otsego County a few years ago, and why you should not post pictures online and allow officials to take dna samples. Also, Why NYS trappers & hunters should never refer to coyotes as Coy-wolves, or Brush-wolves, or Coy-dogs. All the past cooperation between NYS trappers & college graduate-students, providing DNA samples of our coyote catches for their doctorate thesis studies on wolf/coyote hybridization has come back to haunt us, and will become the basis for the elimination of trapping in New York State. w

All we need is more bleeding hearts and liberals running the country. It's going to become a dog eat dog world! Survival of the fittest! Too many see blood or any kind of dead animal , and they go bonkers. Same with the border , they had homes before they came here, let them stay at home until they can come here legally!
We have met the enemy and the enemy is us!

i am waiting on dec to do something with the huge muskrat decline in nys over the last 20yrs Keep running your piehole about it and they will do something. They'll put a yearly bag limit on muskrat and/or close the season entirely. Would that make you happy ? Be careful what you ask for mark, as we are living on borrowed time. w

Run that up the flag pole with DEC and see if anyone salutes. It could be a plausible argument.

NYSTA is aware of these bills that were introduced into assembly. The DEC as well as NYSTA are strongly opposing both bills. But these bills have the backing of 37 environmental groups pushing these, the same ones that pushed the hunting contest bans. They have lawyers, money, and legislators. A very political subject, as you are all aware from what has happened in other states involving wolves. You're right, this was spawned by the hunter that shot what he thought was a coyote back in 2021 but was later confirmed to be a wolf by DNA testing. Don't blame the hunter, he is a sportsman like the rest of us and thought he was doing the right thing. Keep in mind this was only the 3rd confirmed wolf kill in 25 years.
One thing NYSTA has done to get out in front of this is to request the DEC to initiate a regulation to require all captive wolves in NY to be DNA tested to provide a database that could be reviewed should a repeat of what happened in 2021 to occur again. DEC does contend that the wolf could have been a captive wolf that was either released or escaped.
NYSTA will keep an eye on these bills and let you know if they gain legs and start to move out of assembly.

Trappermac, Thanks for the update, but I still blame the hunter. IMO like many others, they post pictures for bragging rights. In the future hunters and trappers need to be very careful of what pictures they post on the net, because there can be consequences. I know a group of successful Adirondack deer hunters who have posted many you tube videos. They have been targeted by the DEC Conservation Officers, for minor offenses seen on the videos.
Also, I agree with Walleyed, about cooperating with the DEC.

Your DNA testing is along the same line as proposed legislation here in WA where they want to require the entire cleaned and dried lower jaw of bobcats be surrendered when getting cat sealed for aging purposes. The patients are running the insaneisilums and the clowns are running the circuses

These legislators from the NYC area are constantly introducing these type bills. Fortunately DEC and NYSTA are on top of them in opposition.. I sure am not going to weigh every coyote I catch because of this stupidity.. I do have heartburn with the direction or lack of DEC studies. Presently it is the bobcat plan, the second time around, and estimated to run until 2033!!!!. What a waste of time and money. What they should be doing is completing plans like the fisher plan or studying the decline in muskrats.and varying hares, or grey foxes. Where is the long over due otter management plan??? You can't convince me there were not secret deals made by DEC to financial contributors during the reintroduction well over 25 years ago.Furbearers are valuable , renewable resources that should be harvested when they are most prime and not for the convenience of DEC.,such as the October southern tier fisher season. They should be listening to trapper input rather than sending out surveys geared to trap trappers. Why do these management plans run ten years or longer.? That is ridiculous. Please don't get me wrong, there are some dedicated biologists within DEC, however They all have to play the political game to protect their butts.
