Call police, call lawyer, shut up! Kinda. Call 911. Only say there was a shooting and you were the victim. Nothing else. When cops show, state you were the victim and you will cooperate but first you need to go to the hospital. They have to bring you. Then call your counsil.

When cops show, state you were the victim and you will cooperate but first you need to go to the hospital. They have to bring you. Then call your counsil. This, but keep in the front of your mind that ANYTHING you say can and WILL be used against you so be cooperative but absolutely weigh each word that comes out of your mouth until you have the opportunity to consult with an attorney skilled in such matters. Things said in the heat of the moment or trying to explain away what just happened will have an entirely different context to someone who wasn't there when it all went down. Hospital is how you buy time to compose your thoughts and decompress before proceeding. Be aware that any statements to medical personnel outside of the scope of medical care may not be protected by doctor/patient. Same for statements to family members. And do not fall for the fallacy that you only need a lawyer if you're guilty of something. Your fifth amendment rights are clear, refusal to answer cannot be used against or for you, nor can lawyering up no matter what the investigator says. Also keep in mind that courts have ruled that the police can lie as an investigative tactic. Believe nothing. The Rittenhouse case being exhibit 1 for the lengths the prosecution will go to distort the truth against you. And may God have mercy on you if you lie or half truth anything as that will moot any truth you may utter later. Better to say nothing at all if you have something to hide than to try to cover for it.

What if we don't have a lawyer to call? I've only paid lawyers to do estate planning stuff. Those guys can't spell criminal law.
Is a guy supposed to go out and get a lawyer lined up BEFORE he plugs somebody?
Push come to shove call the estate guy and have him come down until someone he recommends can get there. All attorneys should have the most basic training to say nothing until you have to. That or avail yourself of the one of the many bail bondsman/dui lawyers advertised around the county jail long enough to get you a good one. In the moment buy time without incriminating yourself. Contrary to conventional wisdom you are not obligated in any way with assisting in the investigation. This of course may mean going directly to jail and not passing go but eventually you will be given access to a phone, they're bugged so don't spill your guts on a jail phone, and you or a family member can get a lawyer to the jail. Face to face conversations with lawyers cannot be recorded by the jail without warrant, in which case your lawyer is in on it with you but we're not talking self defense there. Talk to no one at the jail both jailer or inmate outside of name, rank and serial number. Remember the anything said part. BTW, I'm not an attorney and this is not legal advice. Just a guy who has had reason to learn a few things.
