At the speed setting at FHA all the fastest guys compress both springs at the same time and use their knee to open the jaws and set.Step on the jaws with the trap standing up and pull the bottom spring arms up until they can grab and squeeze the spring eyes in one motion-all in the technique.Need a good strong grip though. I set all kinds of traps no problem by hand for years on the line but last few years always use setters, too hard on the old elbow joints. This was my thought when reading Carl52's post. What he, and then you, described is standard for the 300 setting contests I've watched. Is using setters allowed in a 330 contest? If they are... they shouldn't be.

It's not about monster strength....it's technique. And not having arthritis in both hands lol. That's why I use setters now. I can do it with my hands still but pay the price later that night

Maybe you need two setters????? It’s good to find out if you can still do it though! I left setters in the canoe yesterday, 20’ away, and set a 750 by hand, just cuz. Wasn’t fun after being spoiled with one hand setters.

Want to test your hand strength pick up up a new Duke 330. They will even defeat several of the scissors type setters .

Tis why they invented 3/8" rope. Never leave home without it. Exactly. My rope has lived in my vest pocket for 20+ years. It comes in handy for packing beaver out too.
I have nothing clever to put here.

beaverpeeler wait till you are our age. I am now very scared of the duke 330, never even touched a belisle or canadian one. I do have two out (but very seldom) now but much prefer my foot holds unless I am with someone else......jk = 81 years old

Ive never carried a pair of setters with me. Always set over my knee. One thing I do like them for is taking beaver out of the trap, but the setters stay in my shed. I'd be losing them sooner or later if i carried them and Its another thing to carry, too inconvenient for my liking

I'm just a shade less than 67 and will come time I'll have to rethink things....but for right now I got no reason to change. Easy peasy and I never leave them behind.

I used to set 330s by hand until my carpal tunnel started kicking in. At my age a setter is a must.
My wife wants me to wear a bracelet that belonged to her grandfather. It says, "Do Not Resuscitate".

If I’m trapping the river and leaving from our place, my setter is about the only thing I’ll turn around for. I sometimes forget it on the bike. Lunch, gun, no problem. Setter, better turn around. Lol. It turned me into a sissy.
