I took my yellow lab as a puppy, hid antlers, and when we walked into the wind and she found them, I praised her like all get out and gave her a piece of bacon... when you say the word antler now, she goes crazy looking for them. It was that easy for me. She's 3 now, an antler finding machine.

Most pet stores and Farm & Homes sell antler chunks as dog chews, give them one on occasion and they will love you forever and love looking for them.

I started our chocolate lab at 8 weeks. She just turned 5. We play with an antler every day. She's found a few wild ones, but I just don't get her out enough. Went only once so far this season, found nothing.
There's also a scent stick, like deodorant, that you can rub on an older antler for training. Utube it.

whatever you do when you start them off use a rubber antler or they might poke their mouth and if that happens they associate antlers with pain and they will never be a good shed dog.

The rifle has no will of its own it may be used for evil but there are more good men than evil men and evil will be corrected by good men with rifles.

I got a Boykin Spaniel female at 7 weeks old The first thing I did was spend lots and lots of time with he r.If I was putting my shoes hat gloves or whatever on I would say her name and than say OK I put my hat gloves shoes on When it was it time to take her ouI I would say sit let me put your leash on .She quickly learned the English language just by me talking-to herr and tell her what the name of the object was I also gave her several antlers to chew on And from the beginning she had a couple of different colors rubber balls We named all of them And at play time would tell her to get Red Ball etc and when ahe came bach k with th e right one we would give her a treat And sometimes we would say go get a deer antler And if she brought one back she got a treat So we where training her but it was just play time /treat time for her I had her out looking for sheds a few ttimes but we did not find any Then one day I went to take care of something and decided to look at a location that was quick and easy And I found a nice one So when I got home I tried a rope to the antler and dropped it and went for a walk in my yard and on into the woods behind my house .Left the antler in the woods and went back to the house Left the dg into the garage and than out the side door where I dropped the antler without a word from me she whole time she picked up the trail and scent trailed it on the same route I had used I to put it there She did not see me put it there and I had not given any verbal command But within maybe 2 minutes she had it in her mouth Now any time we are out I will call her to me and say OK find an antler or deer horn or deer bone Her tail starts to go and her nose is on the ground and she is hunting for a deer horn She did not take much training to do what I want her to do And a large part of the training was as miuch play time as training And by spending a mch time bonding whih her she does understand wat I want her to do .Dogs are being trained to hunt dead bodies ,drugs bmbs etc Why not deer antlers

I had my lab trained for sheds and pheasants by a trainer. She never really got into the antler finding and I did continue to work her. I do quite a bit and she was in the woods with me and absolutely loved being
there with my son and I. Often she'd run back and forth checking on the two of us. Even though that didn't work out just having her get the exercise was worth it. She was a beast on the pheasant though, miss
her everyday!
