Wild onions grow in clumps with a hollow stem top like domestic onions. They dont grow all summer like garden onions. The bulbs are small with a strong flavor. Often just the stem is eaten chopped up like chives. Some people call them chives. The stem of wild onions has a lot more flavor than chives though they look very similar.

The answer is yes. Our Wild Onions here don't grow in clumps but in individual plants and can be called ramps or wild leeks. If you research are wild onions and ramps the same thing, it says yes. Just expressed in a different term by locality.

Ours have a leaf like an onion though and will make hair grow on your chest in seconds. As far as how they taste smell and look, they are the same. They grow all year but spring they are more visible because of the flowering and aroma. I have them all over and I have never seen them in clumps.

There's a lot of local terms for ramps. When people around here see the term "wild onion" theyre thinking of the ones all over the yard.

there are many different types of wild onions. Ramps are also known as wild leeks (Allium tricoccum), there is a narrow leaf version (Allium burdickii). There is wild Garlic (Allium canadense), and several types of wild onions that are relatively common. Prairie Onion (Allium stellatum) and Nodding Wild Onion (Allium cernuum).

I have all of these growing in my prairies and woods. There are lots more types but these are the most common and cover prairie and woodland habitat.
When you start talking about alot of types of plants you almost have to get into the Genus and specie, the common names change from area to area and sometimes different plants are called the same thing, its a mess.

Hey, Nate. Here is a photo I took of some of the spring edibles we find here.

Second from the bottom are ramps we dug in our woods. As Sniperbbb stated, the ramps have flat leaves. Completely different from the chives at the top of the photo.

Thanks all, the wild onions I find look like the chives in Patrice's pic. If I pull them there's a small bulb on the end.

Here are some ramps I dehydrated and keep to add a handful to certain recipes. My favorite way to eat ramps is clean and don’t remove leaves. Dice the whole ramp up (several) heat some olive oil in a CAST IRON pan salt and pepper and suatee (sp).
