We are in the process of planing a hunt this fall. It will be an DIY hunt, we are looking at units 44 and 444. We put in for mule deer in 444 and OTC elk tags for 2nd rifle. Never hunted Elk or Mule deer, have looked at it on the maps. Anyone have any info they are willing to share about these areas. Not looking for monsters, just something solid.

I have not hunted those units in particular but any of the OTC are usually a pretty tough hunt you will need to hike in as far as you can from a trail head to avoid some people

Better do it this year.

No OTC tags starting next year.

There talking about that for archery only not 2nd & 3rd rifle.

44 & 444 are just south of where we hunt, most of the deer where we hunt head down there to winter. Never hunted it but a few of my buddies have, they saw and harvested some nice bucks.

Right now .....go write down what you're hoping to experience, go into detail.

Then when you get home....wait a few days, and write down what the actual experience was like.

Considerable amount of those areas are private land, or private land that limits access to private. Trail heads will be busy places. Not only hunters but hikers, dog walkers, mountain bikers, getting way back is key. Concentrate on 44 not alot of public access so be prepared.

It was Gary but up in the northwest corner, central Colorado fared pretty well.

I don't believe they have actually approved eliminating OTC tags for archery yet. I saw they proposed it though.

Get in shape. Elk can be very tough. Terrain is rough, steep, cold, and might be snowy. Horses are your friends.
