Boco in order to get skins from that lot you need to be the highest bidder(.) that phone call was a favor from a buddy. I highly doubt Tom, Dick or Harry can pick up the phone and make a call to FHA for a few select skins.

Well Im sure fur brokers are all honest people. But having one guy buying for 20 people doesn't help the trapper. Say what you want. Just like cattle buyers. And I go to that cause that's what I know. I have bought calves a number of times in my life. It's cheaper to pay a order buyer than do it yourself because they won't bid up there own buyers they fill an order and move on. Now with online bidding and smart phones that's all chsnged. Joe blow can literally stop for 5 minutes while doing chores and but a load of calves. Id guess it's the same with fur. But the key is a live auction for online bidders. I think we should organize all these state fur auctions into one big American fur auction! Then we might have something! Who am I kidding trappers organizing!! Lol
Just to put it out there I like FHA auction like bidding on fur I just think they could do better for everyone involved. And I'm not sure alot of trappers know this but on top of your commission they charge a buyers commission and handling fees. Im not sure but I bet there getting close to 20 percent of every dollar going thru there!

In some cases, it is more than 20%. Buyers pay the following fees

8.2 % of hammer price. On a $5.00 muskrat, that is 41 cents. On a $50.00 beaver, $4.10. On a $500.00 wolf, that is $41.00!

Also, there is a per pelt handling fee. Varies by species.

Muskrat. 60 cents per pelt
Beaver. $3.00 per pelt
Coyote. $4.00 per pelt.
Wolf. $15.00 per pelt.

Do the math - FH makes money on both ends. Despite what some have said - Fur Harvesters is a business.

What FHA is doing there is taking a bidder out of the sale. Maybe if they kept them in the auction, they would have got a few dollars more for that fur. Less people bidding doesn't push up the price. Was that a front door or rear door deal? I hear stories of rear door deals at FHA.

I just sold stuff on a taxidermy sale that had bidding online, and the floor at the same time. It even had a pictures of everything as it was bid on. I could watch it in real time bidding and it was a great sale.

There are state of the art websites that offer professional online auction services. FH should look into it. I bet it would pay off.

I can register and bid on almost any auction in the world in seconds setting in my living room. The point is NO ONE is gonna put up with the hassle to buy a few skins at FHA. Only people from the frozen north where their brain has been frozen in time would think otherwise.

For my purposes, better bargains and better selection than at many of the state association sales. And I don’t have to drive 400 miles one way to Glenn’s Ferry, idaho or 600 miles one way to Blackfoot, Idaho.

Anyone can call them and buy any kind of skins.At the auction or private treaty.

If I’m reading Boco’s post correctly, his purchase was 100% above board. IMO

The goods had been graded and ready for auction.

Boco told them what he wanted.

They took the pelts out of ready for auction lots.

FH adjusted the number of skins in each lot.

The lots sold in the auction room for what ever the high bid was.

Boco paid high bid price.

End of deal.

The only person that MIGHT have gotten shorted was the buyer because he didn’t get as many skins as he could have. BUT, he didn’t know how many skins were in the lot to begin with. Catalog said “8 skins”. He had no way of knowing there were “10 skins” originally.

I don’t think it is unethical per say. However it is an auction, he should have been bidding. The purchaser may have paid more and seller received more.

My point is FHA is not making a practice out of it. What would be the benefit? Just additional work.

As it could be perceived as a back door deal, both the buyer and seller could have reasonable objections imo.Unless it’s published in their conditions.
