With the new electronic media these days I don’t see much in the way of trapping book writing. I’ve thought about writing one before ,not that I consider myself an expert or wish to make money but more as a small legacy to our sport. I think if a man has an unusual trapping area or sets he uses that catch good for him in his area others would be interested. Have any of you written a book like this before? There are tons of old out of print method books that were churned out in the fur boom. I’m talking about something that’d probably take a couple years to thoroughly cover with pics, edits and such.

Best bet would be to publish it electronically. You can self publish on Amazon Kindle or upload it as a PDF somewhere.

I’ve read your posts and saw your site. You could do a good book if so inclined.

I think there's always room for another good book, especially if its from a trapper with a unique area to trap in and sets/techniques that have been developed to deal with unusual terrain

I've written and published four books and well over 100 scientific articles, book chapters, and magazine articles. While three of the books are not specifically "how-to" books on trapping, they do have trapping stories in them. I encourage writing. The books with trapping stories are "Wild Life', "The Last Hunt", and "Long Way Home". They are available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Trafford Press, etc.

Thanks for that. I have several drafts of articles saved on the computer or written on paper I just havent gotten around to either finishing to sending in for being published. I am a hopeless revisionist, am always rewriting things then I forget about em lol. I would have a hard time doing a book because I so much of what I do has come from things that I have learned here that I definitely couldnt market it to anyone that's ever been on this site lol.

Revise away without regret. Your finished product will benefit greatly from your hard work in this regard. Find someone whose opinion you respect proofread it. That will help you to find out if the reader is able to follow along as you intend.

No more true statement has ever been made

To me the missing ingredient in most books is how when where and wht is how to determine location. We all know if they are not where we make our sets you can't catch them no matter how great our set it or how inciting the bait or lure.

Go for it. Self publishing is fairly easy. This is the golden age of publishing because you can pretty much do it yourself.

Take it from a guy who has published 17 books, Some of which I made a lot of money on, some of which didn't do very well. The days of printing books and making money on them are OVER.

If you think it sounds like fun and would be a good use of your time, then knock yourself out. You'll never produce much income on it; you'll probably never break $3 an hour. You can do kindle books, or you can do print-on-demand, but printing large quantities and selling them is a losing proposition. Printing costs, shipping costs and advertising costs have skyrocketed.

Thank you Bernie. Was hoping you’d add to the conversation. I have a friend who is an actual author and he does the same. I guess I just long for the days of trapping books and people having them to pick up and actually read. I am looking at it from more of a somewhat all I have to offer from a lifetime of trapping gift/legacy than making money though. I have a couple of articles published. Bucket list is to have something in FFG someday..

My take....Continue writing the trapping articles for the TRAPPING mags, where your target audience appreciates what you are doing. Editors are dying for trapping related stuff for the magazines. I'm sure FFG would love to have a chance to view/buy your articles...they like good quality pictures to go with the writings. Share your knowledge, experiences and entertain the readers it his time for a fresh face. Good luck.

You have to do it for the fun. If you want to make money do something else. I had the time of my life writing “ POSSUMS BY THE MILLIONS” and going to Conventions to sell the book and t shirts from 2003 through 2006. Planned on writing sequels but could never get in that far out of a mindset again. If you write and print one don’t get carried away with how many you get printed. I sold a lot of them but still have boxes of them. ; )

Some books sell better than others. I have some that took 20 years to sell 2,000 copies, but I have one that has sold over 28,000 in the same 25 years.

My experience, I'm sure, has been different from other authors. Short articles that I sold to magazines such as FFG largely paid for publishing the books. I do no advertising, don't have a publishing house and no publicist/agent. I don't do any book-signings or other outreach. I trap, hunt, and fish, period. Thus, I've lost money on all books. It's something I enjoy doing, I think because it feels so good when I stop. If my mom will buy a few more, pretty soon I'll make enough to buy a six-pack.
