I have heard reference to chew guards on foothold traps for raccoons. Can someone post a puc or explain to me what this is and how to add this to footholds

It's a bar added under the jaws of traps to reduce the area under the jaws to prevent access to the foot under the jaws.

There are double jawed traps still made for that purpose.

But I was thinking that there used to be a crimp on chew guard like the old crimp jaw teeth.

The whole idea is to eliminate room under the jaws.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Here is a sleepy creek #11 Double Jaw LS (modified for center attachment). Same idea to reduce the animal's access to it's foot in the trap.

Good pics ADC and Scott, guys the older webbed jaw traps like the Newhouse #81 are even a better example of what trappers have been trying to prevent when catching coon, skunk and other critters.

I like the guards to the outside.
Have some Hudson Bay traps that are cast DJ.
They are too expensive to use but that
is where I got the idea.
Think it was printed in the t-man book too
At first I had "what if doubts".
The doubts went away fast.

Back in late 1970 early 80s Victor made a double jawed 1 1/2 coil spring trap. I was using plain 11/2 at that time to trap fox. I was also using those same 1 1/2 coils for raccoon and muskrats. A fellow trapper that was running a long line for mink put me on to the 1 1/2 DJs for the coon. Most of his mink sets were pocket set on creeks with drowning weights. Any one who sets pockets for mink knows you will catching fair number of coon.
So I bought few dozen of the Victor 1 1/2 DJs. Those original Victor DJs had some small issues. But in my opinion they were very versatile trap and well worth having. They quickly became my go to for coon in trails.
Once WI let us start setting an using an unlimited numbers of traps. Victor had quit making the DJs and I wanted more. What I ended up doing was converting some of my plain 1 1/2s to the DJs.

The first two photo are of one of the original Victor DJs

These photos below are of the Plain 1 1/2 I modified myself. I was ask to and wrote up a how to article that is in the first Trapperman book. I don't have a fancy machine shop so that article is just my way of DIY. Looking at the photo you will see that my added jaw touches the main jaw. I did that because it gave my limited welding skills another anchor point for the added jaw. The factory trap has a space.
I also base plated and center swiveled the trap. Mostly because I liked that setup and could do it. All of my DJs that I modded myself are also night latched.

I know I still have a digital copy of my DIY DJ build around here somewhere. That far back it's probably on a floppy disc?
