Anyone found any tanneries that are tanning beaver tails? I seem to remember there were a couple that were planning too.
Dog faced pony soldier and proud of it!

Clint Boyce in Manitoba does them cause he makes wallets. He buys close to 30k a year the last I heard. He was feature and Sponsored on the CBC's Canadian Dragon's Den years ago. Shipping is a killer with all the paper work etc.

The paperwork to legally ship beaver tails back and forth across the border would be very expensive. Why?

Found one in Pakistan ,if you send 5 hundred at a time, then you have export fees and shipping fees, they would not send me one to see the end result, which was ok wouldn’t gave used them any way
Would ship up north before sending anything to that country !!
Think there is to much work for most to deal with as the cost in this country makes it Very difficult to sell crafters work.
I called Tandy Leather to see if they do them, only for their own stores !!
Soon as some one starts here at a workable selling price they will be real busy !

The paperwork to legally ship beaver tails back and forth across the border would be very expensive. Why? Import/export license - $100.00 a year last time I checked. F&W inspection fees. Both ways. Extra shipping costs. It may not be fur, but it is still wildlife. Some folks just put it in a box and mail it, hoping they don’t get caught. If your package happens to be inspected, you will lose the tails plus possibly face a fine for smuggling.

I've heard that a lot of guys shipped castor successfully to the big buyer in Ontario and didn't seem to have any problem. But I know what Wissmiss says is all true.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

The company that bought the equipment from Specialty was working on using the tannery in Pakistan last I talked to them. This company in Pakistan apparently tans them for watch band manufacturers and has been in business for many years. The US company was expecting the tanning cost in Pakistan to be close to what Specialty was charging but it would not be small lot tanning. They were talking thousands of tails per order and there would be no way to keep them separated by individual shippers. They were getting a sample lot done and were not sure how things were going to sort out.
It has probably been over a year since I talked to them and I have not seen any mention of beaver tail tanning on their website.

They aren't particularly hard to tan. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/03/full-16866-213645-20240220_173905.jpg) Anyone who makes leather should be able to do them.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I don't know about how hard to tan they are, but do know that I've tried a lot of peoples home tanned tails for their own wallet and found them to not last more than a week with the constant bending and sitting on during carry and use Coat wallets are a different thing as a purse wallets, there is no constant pressure on them. They always call me back and want to replace them with another, and I tell them not with their home tanned tails, will if they provide a professional tan, crickets after that !
If you have a process that you feel works well I would surely be interested in knowing the recipe and procedure to try it my self
As it is now I'm almost out of large tails for wallets with out a seam in the middle which I don't like to do for smaller wallets
I know that Randy does his own tanning as well for his leather wallets or used to
Right now I don't have the time to do so with my regular job, but come July I retire and could set me up a nice small area for just tails Thanks for any info !!
