Muskrat, here's some history on the 'Coon Puppy' sound-
'Wild' Bill Moore first recorded young Raccoon sounds, to call Raccoon on purpose (I don't recall the year).
Bill lives in Bradford County, Pa., near the NY boarder and is in ill health.
Bill trapped since a boy. Was very active in the PTA. He was a very good trapper & predator caller in his day. A friend told me 'Wild Bill' was a trapping machine in his day.
I met Bill a few times. Our last meeting, I ask Bill how he got the idea to record Coon sounds. Bill and friends hunted with Coon hounds. He had a few live Coon to train these hounds. When he handled Coon, they would make a death cry sound. He got the idea to record Coon pups because they 'cried' the most and 'cried' constantly when handled. POOF- Coon Puppy sound was born.
Word got out, around the PA/NY boarder, that Bill & friends where calling Coon by the boat load.
Word got back to Dennis Kirk of NY.
Dennis was an accomplished trapper at the time and decent predator caller. Around this time, Dennis was selling trapping supplies, lures & fox urine.
Dennis was also a business man. He wanted Bill Moore's Coon Puppy sound for the predator calling market.
There was no money deal between the two. Bill told me, 'I gave him the sound to market. I gave the sound Free to Dennis.'
So most folks think Dennis Kirk developed the Coon Puppy sound, but really it was 'Wild' Bill Moore.
Bill Moore worked for Penelec as a lineman but fell off a pole and screwing him up bad. This fall caused his early retirement. Bill trapped until a few short years ago.
Bill had some serious health issues as of late and he can't get around much. At this time, he's fighting depression because of it.
*Thanks to friend Kyle Renninger (Renny) for filling in some info for this story.
Renny & 'Wild' Bill's traplines overlapped. For a few years, they ran a trapline together.
Here's a pic I took
