A 15 year old girl, Jaylynn Parker, caught an 101.11 pound blue catfish in the Ohio River near New Richmond.

Ohio has not had many blue catfish very long and the record will probably keep going up. Jaylynn's older sister is the research assistant of one of our best friends, who is a professor at Wilmington College.

That catfish is probably not very old. The first blue cats released in Ohio were released in 2009 in a lake. The first recorded catches in the Ohio part of the Ohio River were only in 2019.

It's weird isn't it? I remember in grade school, we did a class trip to the Ohio River and the Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati. They told up that Ohio only owned a 6' wide strip of the river, because of how the river was changing course. They also told us that the river was likely to continue cutting into the Kentucky side, moving away from Ohio. There was talk in the seventies about digging the Ohio side down, to keep the river. The Ohio river flows along 451 miles of our Southern state border.

yeah...waterfowlers in ohio need to know the WV and KY season dates if they shoot over the river.

there is a way to tell how old the fish is but since it was released, you cant do the test as it requires the ear bone of the fish.

I bet blue cats have been in there since the beginning.

the lock and dam system does a pretty decent job. its kept the asian carp from running completely wild in the river.

Blue catfish are native to that part of the Ohio. People have been catching 50+ lb blues from that stretch for as long as I can remember. The stocking program that started in 09 was for a handful of inland lakes only.

I see she caught it jug line fishing. That's something I don't see people do up here. We would run jug lines as kids for snapping turtles.

Bit of a reason for that, at least here you can't leave jugs here unless you're present with them. You can leave bank lines or trotlines overnight like traps
