Never tried deer hide scraps. But sheep wool has a very strong odor and deer hide scraps don't .

I have never used sheep’s wool or deer hide in a dirt hole. I do use whole mice as a lure holder and eye appeal. I catch a lot of them at my camp every time I am up there. I freeze them in Ziploc bags and by the time the next trapping season rolls around I usually have several dozen. My supply runs out quickly during trapping season and then I have to switch back to using sticks as lure holders.
I put a dab of lure on the mouse somewhere and shove it down the hole.
Eh...wot?

Wool attracts mice like crazy. Chew it up and scatter it from H-ll to breakfast.

The thing about sheep's wool Is It never goes bad. And I have a unlimited supply. And uncleaned wool has a very strong odor and It's water proof and It doesn't freeze. But I have used pieces of beaver hide and that worked as eye appeal and a lure holder. So any type of hide or fur should work.
