So I bought a bunch of stereo equipment at an auction. Got this 200w, Kenwood amplifier in the deal. Problem is it doesn't amplify at all. When it is turned up all the way it's at about volume 2 level on a normal stereo. Pushed all the buttons, double checked the connections. Opened it up to check for internal fuses and it has three, all are good. Anyone have any ideas to get it to work correctly? Or what has failed?

Is it hooked up to speakers?

use as a shotgun target

The rifle has no will of its own it may be used for evil but there are more good men than evil men and evil will be corrected by good men with rifles.

That sounds like fun.

I have a Pioneer 929 Amp I bought new in 1974...use it daily. However...in the old Amp world the problem is when they sit for a while the buttons take on gremlins. The common cure is to give each button and dial a vigorous use. Maybe a little light air and twist or punch the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) out of the dials. Even the "tone" or whatever dial will effect the volume, etc. If that does not work then you have a target. Take care...OTC

343 of my brothers died on 911...I'm still (word not acceptable on Trapperman) off...BIG TIME...

200 watt, that's a big one. Betcha it's the power output transistors. If you can turn the volume up with speakers attached and can't hear any white noise from the speakers that's probably what it is.
They generally ran a pair (or a multiple of pairs in parallel), a PNP and an NPN transistor in a push pull configuration.
The old Kenwoods stereo heads were mechanic friendly as in you could unscrew the old amplifier unit from the heat-sink and remount a new one. Good luck finding that new amp unit in this day and time.

Osagian. It does have the heat sink on the back and something mounted to the back of the heat sink. Good thing is this is not what I went to the auction for. Since no one was bidding they shoved a bunch of stereo equipment together. I got a 150w tuner / amp. A graphic equilzer and turntable. Relatively new and working condition. That is what I wanted. Plus the kenwood, a cassette player / amp, and four speakers. A giant sub woofer from some surrounded sound system and all the he remote controls for them. Paid $100.
